ED Trip: Nurburgring or Stelvio Pass
I've been planning my ED trip and I realized that I don't think I can do both Nurburgring and Stelvio Pass in a week w/o burning myself out in driving the distance between. Anybody have any thoughts on whether to go to Stelvio Pass or Nurburgring as a first time EDer?
I figured I'll just do one of them and take back roads to get the fun out of break in mode and even at the Nurburgring I'll just be that slow guy cruising along the right side... |

IMO, you can't go wrong with either. One gets you an amazing road and scenery, the other gets you a legendary race track.
I did the Susten Pass as the Stelvio was too far from where we were. It was amazing. I hear the Furka pass is great too.

I'd submit that you might not actually want to do the Stelvio Pass, and instead choose one of the many other less-famous - but still as twisty (and less busy) other passes.
For examples: - San Bernardino pass - Splugenpass - Malojapass - Sustenpass - Grimselpass Now the Stelvio is famous, I'll give you that. So maybe your interest is more about the celebrity aspect. In which case, well, I guess you'll just have to do the Stelvio. Please also note that (IMO) the more famous north approach to the Stelvio is narrow and "kinky" -- meaning that it is hard to really charge hard on it and have fun. Many of the other passes above have better quality twisties, IMO. Also don't pass up the Nordschliefe - that is also very worth it. I've got a lot of very detailed info on quite a few of the above, as well as Nurburgring experiences in my own European Delivery report: Destination GerM2ny: The Pickup |

I did both Stelvio and the Ring last October.
Nurburgring all day long if I had to choose between them. High passes were great but Stelvio was little overrated IMO. It gets boring doing those S turns after a while. But on the Nurburgring nothing was boring. Hanging out at the Ring, talking to fellow EDers, talking to fellow motorsport enthusisats that drove from all over Europe to be at the Ring. Nothing beats the Ring experience, nothing! I would pick the Ring over any mountain pass. My heart was beating from start to finish on the Ring. You do not get this feeling on the high alpine passes.

I did almost all of the above choices last summer. I would rank Nurburgring over Stelvio especially if coming from the north. I would also recommend any of the Swiss alpine passes over Stelvio just for ease of driving (less narrow) and the ability to do 3 or 4 in a row, only thing is the required Swiss vignette. As far as the insurance...drive on the right and don't be stupid. I reached higher speeds on the autobahn and didn't have the wife telling me to let her out...

That being said, if you go on a public driving day and drive 6-7/10ths and stay out of the way of faster cars you shouldn't have a problem. |

Yup. I plan on a leisurely drive and staying under 5k anyway. It's more of an adventure anyway as gf will also be in the car.
I leave all of the 10/10 driving in my miata |

Go to Spa while you're in that area, that track is amazing. Hands down my favorite track ever and very easy to learn on a first trip, the sight lines into and out of corners are great. |
