M2 Meets Dirt Hill (first post to forum)

Considering the current mandates in Oregon as well as all over the U.S. to stay in and isolate ourselves I, like many others, have found myself needing to leave the house for sanity reasons. Because many are at home that has meant less people on the road, thus much more room to play. I have made "unessential" drives, not to specific locations, simply to drive around and aid my boredom.

Today (March 30th) I enjoyed a nice hour or so of backroading near my house. The roads were pretty empty aside from the occasional biker. It was raining a bit and roads were slick in some areas. Near the end of my drive on the route back to my house I was just finishing up the last windy bit of road and soon would bring my driving back to legal standards. On the last long and windy turn I came in at about 50 mph, braked hard and trailbraked thru the apex but definitely felt like I was still going a bit too fast on exit with the rear feeling a bit anxious. I wasn't even giving it much throttle, if any, but the rear just slid away. I reacted with a sharp counter, slid right back the other way and ultimately found the nose colliding with a dirt hill on the side of the road which spun me about 180 degrees and bounced me back to the road.

Sadly, this damaged my front bumper pretty well and left one of my tailpipes with a plug of mud (Images Below). Anyways, just thought i'd share my karma for disobeying the isolation rules :/. It also didn't help that I was in MDM with minimal traction. I could have easily avoided it but I was too stubborn to acknowledge that the road conditions were not suitable for the way I was driving. Thankful that the dirt hill was there and not a person, car, house, etc. and that I wasn't hurt. I was kind of in the middle of nowhere so it was an optimal place to have the misfortune.

Hope everyone is doing well during this time

That's what you get for having a DCT! hahah just joking. Glad you're safe. Remember, it will def look a lot better without all the mud and I'm sure the damage isn't even that bad.

Glad you’re ok and hopefully a lesson learned. I’ve also taken a good amount of frustration out on my tires and back roads in recent weeks, so I understand. Hope the damage is not too extensive.

Honestly with all the social distancing measures in place, taking a little drive to clear your mind hurts no one. Its probably one of the few things you can do that doesnt risk spreading the disease...

Sucks but shit happens and don't beat yourself up, bodyshops are considered essential services, so even with the current social climate, it shouldn't delay the repair of your vehicle..

Oh well, not karma for driving, just shit happens when driving like that under poor conditions. Anyway, be happy you didn't kill that oil cooler right there, otherwise you'd be in a whole world of $$$ hurt.

Don't beat yourself over it. I had something very similar happen to me last month and it ended up costing me 6k. Best part about is that I was alone too, soo I had to take it like a champ with a big smile.

The important thing is that you’re okay. Might not be super easy to get medical attention right now.

As for the driving, most of us have been there, I know I certainly have. Tough lesson, but one worth knowing.

Durrc That's why you got to come over to Vancouver/Camas to drive on some well-maintained roads! Glad you and the M2C are all safe man.

Portland Roads could use some fixing, as could my judgement lol. Any roads in mind that I should check out up there in WA once I'm back on my wheels?

The biggest risk is getting into an accident and needing to get to a hospital that will be full of covid patients, or taking up a bed that someone else needs..

Takes guts for OP to post this, as a reminder for us all to stay safe and not push our luck. There will be plenty of time to drive and have fun when this is all over. It's not worth the risk IMO.

Durrc One of the best drives is Washougal River Road. A very high-speed limit road that has a lot of turns, it is pretty intense so I would keep the car in sport. I would also check out driving from Camas High School to Battleground using the country road (Sport + all-day), you'll be able to drive as fast as you want and check out some beautiful houses and farms along the way.

A little further out, but Wind River Road/Meadow creek Road is pretty awesome.

No harm done, except to your poor M2, but that can be fixed. No Karmic retribution happening here. You were being responsible as far as the pandemic is concerned. Plan to do a little solo road therapy myself this week.
Drive on!

Grew up in Camas. Killer roads out there! Used to take the '85 Scirocco on those roads all the time!
