Base MSRP on the M235i is $44,150. That's a $7000 delta to the $51k base MSRP on the M2 all things being equal. Many people wouldn't take the additional $200+ on the lease monthly payment.
If this leases north of $800 a month, I'm out.

If you are buying though, the m2 offers a compelling argument, particularly when considering resale.

The 1M's high resale prices will no longer be justifiable to the public in light of the M2's similar virtues, relative low cost and higher performance while attainable brand new under factory warranty and with free maintenance.

The 1M will adjust into the low $40's/high $30's in the next couple of years. In the much longer term its resale value will undoubtedly rise again because of its limited production collectibility status.
The Public?? Hell, the public can't even drive a manual! Enthusiasts want the 1M not the public

They can reach all they want. If the car is limited, people will still grab a 235 unless they're willing to wait or are already on a waiting list. It all comes down to production numbers now. A dealer an hour away from me said their wait list is already 50 deep... Yikes

True, and it would suck if it started in the 60s

But, we have to look at it both ways. The CLA45 starts at 48.5k in the US and 50k in Canada, and it wouldn't make sense for the M2 to come into a canadian market costing about 10k more than the competitors. Especially when the 2016 CLA45 is getting more power and a LSD. For this reason, it is quite possible it will be priced in the mid 50s, at around 54-56k.

Also, another example would be the new Ford GT350. It starts at around 50k in the US but 62.5k in Canada.

We don't know which way BMW will go, but lets hope its the former.

EDIT: Also, after checking the M235i prices in the US and Canada, the price difference is only 1k.

I was told $53K base msrp from a very reliable source, along with confirming pretty much everything else we already know (engine, colors, interior, etc) also 30 month production run not a limited number. We'll know everything on Wednesday

The delta seems reasonable. Not really much different than loaded 335s being the same price as M3s.

Great, I really hope the DCT isn't standard, I hate the idea that manual buyers absorb the cost when the DCT is a 'no cost option.'

Any rate, low 50's is a screaming deal, I hope there are enough built so that they depreciate similar to the M3 so I can reasonably afford one in a couple years

$51k is really a nuts low number- I 'built my own' m235i just now and with the only adding LSD, harmon pardon and an optional paint color my build came to $50,030. That makes the M2 a real deal.
