What is going on here? Was that the right price but he got in trouble for spilling the beans? Is it higher than 51k? Is Ford Focus RS calling my name now?

Did you see the commercial for the RS? It was the same night as the M2 unveil. It was the first time I saw it so I wonder if Ford did that on purpose?

Just when we thought we had this car figured out.....

I guess we will now debate the price for another few months.

Just yesterday a local sales manager told me nothing confirmed yet but he heard " it will probably be north of $50"... Whatever that means...

Or maybe BMW is charging closer to $55k and they don't want people thinking its $51k as this post suggests

If it's $55k, it better have DCT standard... that'll really piss off the manual guys. No way I would pay $60k for this car just to get DCT and a few creature comforts. If I can buy a manual M3 via ED for the same price I would pay for an M2, I'll live with the bigger car and lick my poor wounds.

Oh yeh I hear ya. If it's 55k and DCT standard I'd buy it. And I agree it would piss off the MT buyers. Other wise it's not worth it for me I'll just get the M4.

Either way BMW wins from me.

If it's 55k, a Ford Focus RS will be sitting next to my 1M.

And yet, in Germany, they're starting it at €5700 more than the cla45 amg. Why would cla45 amg pricing be an issue here when it apparently isn't in Deutschland?

Release->measure hype->adjust pricing

As a consumer this sucks, from BMW's perspective, its a no brainer. Sure, it would suck to start higher than $51k, but I honestly wouldn't be surprise with initial reactions stating that this might be the most hotly anticipated BMW since the 1M.

For how de-contented most people think it is (and I agree) I think it would be dangerous for them to price it anywhere north of $51k. I know I wouldn't be interested at more than that. Maybe if it had carbon roof, bespoke seats, and M dynamic modes then it would be worth more than that. But as it seems it's the budget M car.

If that's the case I will have to pass. Sucks bit you have to do what you have to do....Focus RS might be in my future...or sell my 1M and use the money as a down payment for a MB C63 S coupe. That is a beautiful car!

I like the M2. However, to charge a "hype price" the end product must meet or exceed the "hot anticipation". The BMW M2 has not met the "hot anticipation" that enthusiasts had for the M2. Those who like it still mention things they would tweak if they could. I'm not paying a ridiculous price for this car. Every time the suspected MSRP goes up, I cross-shop other models and other brands.
