M2 Gran Coupe: Wanted Vs. Not so much

By now all of you have seen the new 2020 M2 GrandCoupe....well, it's not originally what I had in mind or what I was low key excited about.

Wanted this....based on the M2 and we got that based on....well, I'm not so sure??? The X1???

Yes, it shares the platform with the Mini Countryman, X1, X2, and the new 1 series that's only available in other markets. It's basically a 1 series sedan.
The transversely mounted engine limits it to 4 cylinders and they likely won't bother with manual gearbox.
This drivetrain affects the overall shape of the car - short hood that sits higher.

The good news is that the next 2 series coupe will likely be based on a shortened G20 platform so it has a better chance of 6 cylinders and manuals.

The next 2 series coupe won't be FWD like this ugly thing with its short hood, it will be based on the CLAR platform and produced in Mexico.

Honesty, the S3 more sporty with its short wheelbase than the new M235i even though the interior is outdated. However I can see young people that aren't enthusiasts getting in the Gran Coupe, they should've been BMW's target market for this vehicle.

its there to compete against the audi s3/rs3. they'll probably move the rwd m2 coupe upmarket to the where the f82 first started in the price...probably 65-80k range.

the grancoupe probably will compete in the 50-65k range and reduce mercedes/audi's cost advantage using fwd platforms vs bmw rwd platform currently.

I think that the whole Gran Coupe idea is silly. Not sure what a 4 6 and 8 Gran Coupe adds versus a 3 5 and 7 series. So why try a 2 series Gran Coupe.

My ideal car would be an M2 Gran Coupe. Small in size. Shorter doors so it's easier to get in and out of in tight spots. Easier to grab seatbelt. Of course I'm guessing and just going off of my experience with coupes from my 4 series and Genesis Coupe. Haven't actually taken delivery of my M2C yet. I just like smaller sized cars, why does everything have to keep getting bigger?

I've thought that for quite sometime.

I'm thinking the Grand Coupe is a sportier version of the traditional 3,5,7 sedans maybe? They are longer and seem sleeker as well.

If anyone can enlighten us....please do!

It’s hideous. Just awful, in every way. It makes me fear for the next M2.

I would like a 4 door M2, but if it looks anything like that, it’s a hard no from me. At least the coupe will be RWD not like the abomination that is the M235 GC.

This thing is garbage and shouldn't even be called a 2 series platform.

Actually I don't mind the 4,6,8 GC. I think they have their place in the lineup.

3,5,7 sedans are very traditional and classy

4,6,8 coupes are sleek and sporty at the cost of practicality

The gran coupes slot in between. If the 4 series GC was available with a manual I would have considered it.

Unfortunately this 2 series proportions dictated by the drivetrain are hideous. It didn't have to be that way. The Audi S3/RS3 is a good looking car.

It's an aesthetic mess. Take the roundel off the back and it looks like half a dozen Japanese/Korean economy sedans, along with yet another unattractive grill design. I know that the "Gran Coupe" designation doesn't necessarily require a particular rear access design (or does it?) but I did think at the very least this car would have the same type of rear hatch as the 4 Series Gran Coupe, with a full lift hatch and wide-open rear access. This just has a plan trunk, so they can call it whatever they want but it's a sedan. It makes my M2 look like Van Gogh's "Starry Night" rolling down the highway.

Let's 'put things into perspective'.

The French saying "Reculer pour mieux sauter" means "Stepping back (to prepare) for a better jump".

So:
  • first BMW shows the 2-Series GC, giving us an idea of future design, polarizing the petrolhead community;
  • subsequently BMW unwraps the M2 CS, graciously bidding farewell to the 'oldskool' design, and the petrolhead community is at peace again.
