M2CS vs 992 carrera S

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I haven't seen this one discussed before. Would anyone consider this trade?

Carrera S is a lower tier 911 but still super quick and great on track.

CS loses in probably every performance category but has much more personality and is more "special" considering the product.

The only way I would trade a CS for a 911S is if the CS was an auto and the Porsche was a manual. Other than that, I don't think I would.

I wanted to start a thread about this exact comparison. These two cars are more alike than the GT4/GTS.

Both cars are 3.0tt and both are 2+2. The 992 C2S is the only car (or 992 GTS) I would take over my M2cs. However the price difference is $50k more for the Porsche. IMO the 992 is the proportionally the best looking 911 ever and if I could justify the money I would buy one in a second.

No chance I'd buy an $80k + 2 series, and the 992 is also uninteresting to me. For similar money I'd rather have 997 or 991 GT3.

CS overpriced imho, but that's just my viewpoint.

Porsche however clearly thinks of the M2 as a worthy competitor, and it is very rare that they give an unofficial heads up to another manufacturer...

Enjoy the vid, skip to 2:59 to see what I mean.

Overpriced, perhaps...

Awesome to drive, absolutely!

I love my M2 with litchfilied suspension, -ve camber arms and apex wheels, but its a very well engineered 2 series, its not a 911 though. Anymore than an M5 is, they are different things

You need to go and see one and decide if you like it. I did this as a sort of due diligence before getting the CS.

It left me a bit cold. It has poor ergonomics, no real back seat and doesn't have the same fun factor as the CS. The PDK is designed more as an auto than encouraging you to shift by yourself. Plus it is exactly double the price on road.

But choice is an individual thing. It may float your boat. It may not. Looks nice though. I love that green colour they have. Also looks great in the chalk colour which is the one I looked at.

I had my 991.1 GT3 before picking up my M2, don't get me wrong the standard M2 is a great car, its not a CS and definitely not a GT3

Every car I have owned I have tweaked always swapping suspension and usually brakes. The only cars I havent done that with are a 964RS and the GT3, all my M cars including an E30 M3 ended up going under the spanner and ending up with some sort of coilover suspension

Im not sure what that says, perhaps I dont really like road cars and prefer more track oriented cars, even if my last track day was 2018 !

On paper the CS is a lightly modded CS for a £20k premium. I get the press say differently but surely a few mods on a CS or even M2 could get you near for far less

The 992 generation just feels big when you sit inside of it. Drove a 4S and yes it has gobs of power, but there was no "event" when pushed. It's a proper GT car, and I'm sure if pushed in the canyons or the track it'll come to life, but I'd rather keep the CS than pick up a 2S or similar...

Two videos from one of my fave channels. If I was going 911 it would be the 993 as a complement to the CS. Always loved that model. The CS is a modern car with that X factor. The 993 is an older car with that X factor. X squared.

I would never buy a BMW over a Porsche if I could afford both. It's nothing to do with the brand and everything to do with Porsche building better cars.

I love my CS. I liked it more than the two P cars (Boxster Spyder and 997 I drove before I bought it. I haven't had the chance to drive a 992 though.

This above is the truth. You can hold onto a Porsche much longer and with more trust than a BMW. I love both cars however, the Porsche is just made to last longer when you get the NA engines. The Cayman S is always thrown into comparisons but I feel that car is grossly under powered for now.

It depends on what your priorities are. If you want road feel and character the CS wins over the 992 S. If you want refinement and a more upscale experience Porsche wins. The 6 speed manual transmission in the CS is also superior to the 911 S 7 speed (gearing too tall) manual. However the PDK in the 911 S is superior the DCT in the CS. The better 911 comparison is the GT3. The GT3 wins on pretty much every level but it's also 2x or 3x the cost of the CS. I have a 992 911 Turbo S in addition to the CS. They're completely different driving experiences but both special.

* If driven as an auto as Porsche intends. BMW intends you drive it as a manual. Auto modes in the BMW punish the drIver as they should.

Even a Base 911 is superior

I literally just went to California to put an offer in on a 996 C2 with 64,000 miles and after driving it I must say they are amazing cars. I love BMW cars as well but I still stand by the Porsche cars are made to run longer besides the parts are pricey and hard to find sometimes.

I certainly agree with the statement that it depends on what ones priorities are (or at least at the time you take the keys to head out). I believe the M2CS to be an exceptional machine and likely value per dollar supersede that of the 911. Not saying it is better than a 911, just saying it is a difference experience and I believe great one. Porsches are sports cars and the M2 is a VERY capable and nimble "Sport Sedan"

I have mixed feeling about the the PDK (or at least which PDK) vs the DCT proposition, which I think follows the statement above - "depends what ones priorities are". The DCT it is much more comfortable to drive around town while the PDK I feel is quite jerky (at least on the RS models) in low gears. The DCT still very quick but once put in comfort is quite pleasant to drive around. I have a GT2RS and approaching street lights or any stopping that requires 1st gear it is just not pleasant while in "D" mode. Slightly better in manual mode where you can control the downshift and avoid the clunking into 1st...now once you are going the PDK it is sweet and unbeatable, while the M2CS I feel I just throw it in comfort and you can drive it around town with pleasure. I would assume the PDK in the 992 Turbo is maybe more civil that the one in the RS models?? (since it is probably the most complete all around car IMHO).

I found myself before I read this post, thinking how much pleasure I got from driving the M2CS, how capable and comfortable it is, while comparing it to the GT2RS (which today still my favorite car) and the feeling remains the same; I still think the return on investment the M2CS wins dollar/smiles.

The solidness of the 991.1 makes all three of my BMW's feel brittle. Can't speak for prior generations but you can see where at least some of the money goes with Porsche and thats into build quality and materials for sure.

The BMW's are more soft, comfortable and practical. Somehow I have a funny feeling I'm not the first person to ever say that though

I also hear water is wet.

992 is better. it was designed from the ground up to be a sports car. it is lighter. has more displacement. and if you've ever driven a 911... the mechanical grip from the rear and braking ability immense.

The M2CS has the benefit of being more rare (probably better resale). more usable back seats. cheaper to service. and more playful on the street since its an FR setup.

I'd take a M2CS over a Carrera S - the Porsche is a little too slow.
