Just as another perspective.

I used iDrive5 in 7 series loaner for a week a few months ago. Yes its different and has icons instead of menu's - but the Nav and sub menu's (e.g text messages) are very similar.

its just an evolution, and not a revolution over the already fast NBT. I didn't think 'wow I must have this'
i would like CarPlay and Waze, but that of course isn't released yet

The BMW apps (i use Audible and that M Power timing thing) are the same. The only advantage iDrive55 gave was connection to these apps over BT and not just cable.

Although plausible, sounds like a guess presented as fact when:

1) This is nowhere in writing for the US production.
2) 1 BMW Genius rep last week and 2 BMW Genius reps yesterday (one dealer, one hotline) could not confirm iDrive 5.0 in M2
3) A Canadian CA last week said no iDrive 5.0 in MY17 M2

However, they all agree that wireless charging, wifi hotspot and 8/16 Carplay will be available. There is also some new feature for Android 5.0 and later.

Carplay?

So I received an allocation for week 31 build end of July. Called a Genius rep and was told that Carplay would not be an option yet. Seems odd to delay a feature for a new model year. Do I believe him and wait for another allocation if I want it?

The rep is merely stating the same thing that's already in writing, and AFAIK there was never confusion about this feature being included several months after SOP.

For Canada anyway, earlier MY17 builds will be able to get this feature as a software update:
"please note vehicles ordered for July and August production will not include option code 6CP, but will be eligible for a no-charge retrofit from 9/16"

Correct not in writing and therefore not fact.

I do believe from other sources and please correct me if I read this incorrectly; http://www.2addicts.com/forums/attac...3&d=1465838030...

6CP AppleCar Play requires ordering 609 Navigation System.

Which to complete the chain leaves the question is 609 Navigation System iDrive 5.x?

What does SOP: 8/16 mean? Only that the required hardware and wiring loom support the feature but that it may not be installed?

start of production for august. I have no idea what physical components Carplay may add or depend upon in addition to the Carplay software component running in iDrive 5.0. However, the Canadian info says "retrofit", which to me means some hardware component is required.

I haven't seen "retrofit" on any of the US docs, yet. If so, I would hope that it's not more than the option but we know that wouldn't be true

It seems very strange that BMW could or would as a practical matter produce some 2 series models with Idrive 5 and some with 4. I would be shocked if they did, there is a hardware change for the Idrive controller and the screen so it seems overly complicated that they would have separate components like that on the assembly line. My bet is the MY17 M2's will have Idrive 5.0, if not I am totally cool with that as long as I get my apple carplay.

So here's a bit more news from Canada:

The MY17 M2's are indeed getting iDrive 5.0

HOWEVER

The July production MY17's for Canada will NOT have this due to a supply shortage issues. August-on it is supposed to be back to normal.

A software retrofit is likely going to be made available to the July MY17 owners, which in turn means it would also work with any MY16 owners. This is yet to be officially confirmed.

I emailed bmwgenius@bmwusa.com asking if Apple Carplay (via iDrive 5 or on its own) would be offered as a software update or retrofit to MY 2016 M2s. Here's the response I received.

"Thanks for contacting the BMW Genius Team.

At this time, we have no plans to offer Apple CarPlay as a software upgrade. Apple CarPlay requires iDrive 5.0 and other additional hardware features. We regret any disappointment this may cause.

As always, BMW Genius product experts are readily available at participating authorized BMW centers to answer any questions you may have about our vehicles.

For your convenience, BMW Genius Team members can also be reached via the BMW Genius Hotline Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Eastern Time and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time at 1-844-4GENIUS (443-6487).

I hope this information is helpful. Thanks again for your inquiry."

No it does not mean it would also work with MY16 owners. Carplay for BMW was developed using iDrive 5.0 interfaces, so iDrive 5.0 is required. For MY16 to have retrofit, new FSC codes would have to be issued as iDrive 5.0 uses a different scheme and the required build date checked by the i-level update would have to be changed to 7/16 at minimum. Also there are the display rez change and controller differences.
There may be way to get it to work 100% with existing MY16 hardware (I.e. including maps, connected drive, etc) but no doubt it'll be expensive to implement and a BMW service center won't do it.

I just called BmW genius...my car is set to be completed on Aug 1st. It has Idrive 5.0 and they said at this time applecarplay will not be able to retrofit...any build starting aug 1st one it would be an option.

Sooooooo not sure. Dealer told me opposite.

At this stage I would take BMW Genius' word with a grain of salt - as some other's have noted here in the past, they are product/tech manual "specialists", which broadcast what is handed to them from whatever internal channel. They were the ones afterall saying USA would not receive iDrive 5.0 as late as May, causing confusion here on the boards.

I believe - and want to say this will be the case - that your dealer is right. This should simply be a software update with the 5.0 hardware. Apple licensing rights may be holding up the software install date to 8/1/16, just a thought? Maybe the lawyers over at BMW HQ needed some extra time to get this all sorted

The BMW Genius dept does have access to specific model development management. If something is questionable like available features and options during MY transition period, you can actually have them contact the ultimate source. It takes up to a week for the official reply however. But there is no better authority and you likely can't contact production mgmt yourself. The worst person to ask is a BMW dealer as they tend to be lazy, uninformed and always wanting to tell you what they think you want to hear.

My dealer has a BMW Genius on site. The CA defers technical matters to him and he probably just calls BMW when he doesn't know.

The CA was delivering when I stopped in prior to ordering my car. Since I had a lot of technical questions and b/c he was so busy, the CA just unleashed me on the BMW Genius who also ended up taking me on a test drive.

Agree. When asking about when a particular build week and pressing the guy, I found out that they just use Outlook to communicate when a build week is and not some internal system. So sometimes they have no better information than we do.

My dealer's BMW Genius gave me incorrect information - no iDrive 5.0 for the M2.
