HPDE

I just got an email about BMWCCA HPDE (High Performance Driving Event) in April. They no longer require that you take a CCC (Car Control Clinic) before you can register for a HPDE.

If you have never been on a track before, you should sign up for one of the HPDE. It will really teach you about the handling and performance of your M car. You will have an instructor in the passenger seat coaching you on the proper line on the track.

I have been on the track on and off for forty years. It really makes you appreciate the car BMW built for you.

It was a really fun day Dan! They changed the format to 3 run groups, 20 minutes each, got 7 runs! I was exhausted.
They paired every first time driver with an instructor till they comfortable to sign off for solo.
Including mine, only 3 M2s respresenting, we need more!

I got an email today about one on May 19. Might go. I did CCC last year and doing my first HPDE would be fun.

Registrations for the 19th look to be pretty light. Only 34 when I registered earlier today. I’m sure they’d appreciate a few more folks signing up.

It is a fun day. If you have never done a HPDE you should take your M2 out at least once.

I just emailed Dave asking a noob question ... whether it would be an issue if my car has a sunroof. I know on the forums there's a ton of sunroof haters because they limit headroom with a helmet. I have no clue how tall those people are and how much is exaggeration vs not.

I'm 5'10 ... obviously the instructor may be taller. DanG and others ... do any of you have sunroofs?

edit: he repleid with

No worries. Slicktops are quite rare and most track cars have sunroof. Usually lowering the seats to their lowest settings or leaning back a bit does the trick. In my car, my helmet often touches the headliner. Bring what you have!

My E46 M3 had a sunroof. I am also 5’10” and I had no problem. My M2 doesn’t have a sun roof. I had plenty of space above my head. I wouldn’t worry about the instructor. Practice your sitting position with a helmet on before the HPDE. That way you will know how to position yourself.

What do you guys do for your tech inspection? Do you take in somewhere and ask for them to check a subset of what's on the list? I can obviously check a bunch of this stuff myself like my mirrors and pedals working...

The list mostly reads like its for cars that have had a long life so I don't know if you guys just self review and check everything off? Not trying to be irresponsible but also being realistic about this still being a relatively new car lol.

We all know “at least once” turns into multiple track days a year lol

One thing to remember is that the brake fluid can’t be over a year old to pass the track inspection.

If I remember right, the track inspection requires a licensed mechanics signature.

Not anymore. You can self-tech now. I think they changed that before last season when they moved to every 30 days for the inspection from annual.

But please know what you’re doing if you self-tech. It’s cheap to have a shop do it if you aren’t sure.

It is highly recommended now that a qualified shop do the tech inspection. Here is a link to the form: https://cdn.sanity.io/files/clgsgxc0...ff3f46bcc7.pdf

I've been debating if I want to go and do an HPDE with the CCA up here. Just moved here from SF where I did a lot of HPDE and track days.

Thing is, I don't own a BMW currently. Hate to be [I]that guy[I] rolling up in an Elantra N when I used to have an M2 Comp knowing how I used to look at Hyundai/Kia cars. LOL.

Went for one of the driving tours with the CCA and it was fine, but man do I miss my M2.

A pretty wide variety of cars show up. I wouldn’t hesitate to take your Elantra.

Hooked on Driving, Audi Club, and Porsche club all run good events as well if you are looking to get to some other tracks besides Pacific. BMWCCA does all but one event at Pacific and there are some other great tracks within a few hours drive.
