M2 Competition 1 Coronavirus 0
Short version:
After a long saga (see the long version below), I managed to pick up a 2020 M2 Competition! (Sunset Orange, Orange Stitching, Carbon Trim, Manual Trans, Executive, M Performance Exhaust, M Performance Rear Diffuser). Long Version: In the early Fall of last year my wife and I decided to switch up our cars for something different. She likes big sedans and I am partial to small sports cars. So we traded in my Audi RS5 Convertible for a BMW 750i for her. Then I started a new car search for something small and fun. I'm a big guy (6'6" and 300lbs) so it's not easy to find a car I can fit in comfortably (or even uncomfortably). Cut to the chase, and I decided that an M2 Competition was for me. I sat in one at a dealer and it was all good. We targeted March 2020 for the purchase due to some financial considerations. I was somewhat familiar with the Costco new car program, so I checked to see if the M2C was available, and it was. Unfortunately my local dealer was the only one that was part of the program. I am not a fan of this dealer due to a previous car purchase (I'm in Boston). But I went ahead anyway figuring that the program was a contractual obligation for them. Hah, not so, they basically said that they were happy to get me an M2C at MSRP but not part of the program. I called Costco and they told me that the dealer was, in fact, obligated to sell me the car at a discount. I asked if I could deal with somebody else since I felt that the local guys weren't honest with me. They put me in touch with the next closest dealer (in Long Island, NY) and they were great. We negotiated a fair price and I ordered the car. Meanwhile there was a car about an hour away, with the same spec, but a bunch of "port installed" options. At the time, MSRP was all they would do. The NYC dealer did find a car in my spec and we were ready to go. But, of course, the virus derailed things. When we heard that NY was going into lockdown I offered to drive down immediately and pick up the car. I negotiated with the finance manager on how we would proceed. I called them when I was ready to head down but the finance manager decided that I couldn't pick up the car. He was worried about registrations and that they would get in trouble. I was pretty bummed at this point since that car was now out of reach; due to no fault of theirs or mine. (I do, of course, recognize that this is really a very minor problem in the grand scheme of things right now). So, I called the guys with the other car and made them an offer. We were able to come to an agreement. Even though it had a bunch of port installed options that I wouldn't have ordered the price was pretty good. I wasn't entirely sure, but my wife said "Dude, stop over thinking it and buy the car" (lover her). So off we went and I drove home with a new M2C! The next day, that dealer also closed due to the state going into lockdown. I feel bad for the NYC dealer, they were really great to deal with right up until the end. If they had concerns I wish they had told me instead of waiting until the last minute (literally) but I also understand that it was somewhat out of their control. Congrats man! You are going to love the new ride. What a saga. Buying a new car is such a big decision only made harder by things out of your control.
I've got the m perf exhaust on my car as well. It's a real Jekyll and Hyde system. Comfort mode is pretty quiet and neighbor friendly. Sport/Sport+ isn't overly loud but ridiculous with all the gurgles and pops. Still makes me laugh. Enjoy!!! |

My M2 is also full of M Performance parts that the dealer ordered. If I had ordered the M2 I wouldn’t have ordered most of them. But as time has gone by, I am actually glad I have them. It really makes my car special and unlike any other M2 that I have seen.
Congratulations on your new M2C. I am sure that you will appreciate the M Performance parts. |

Congrats! Glad you got it worked out just in time. I agree with BigKutta, you may be the last "new" M2 delivery for quite some time! Enjoy and stay safe.

What kind of port installed stuff was on it? I hope its cooler that floor mats and chrome gas cap doors (stuff I could avoid on a camaro, one more reason I got the M2).

I just took delivery of my ordered 2020 M2C this past thursday I also had some close calls...first with rail blockades that delayed delivery by 2 weeks and then there was talk of the licensing office and/or the dealer shutting down due to covid...but I got it and I love it! |

Congrats, post some videos of the M performance exhaust. I don’t think too many people have one. I’m seriously considering it when the world gets back to normal.

Yeah, I think they just randomly picked things from the accessory catalog.
On the cool side it has the M Performance exhaust and the read diffuser. But it also came with rubber mats, a rear cargo tray, cargo net, first aid kit and a set of phone charging cables! |

The entire transaction was a bit surreal.
I called them Saturday morning to see if they still had the car. They reported that they did and told me what options/accessories it had. I happened to be getting some prescriptions then and my bank was next door. I texted the sales buy with "My bank closes in 5 min, what's your best out the door price?" (ha) He sent back a number that was acceptable so I went into the bank and got a check. I then set out for the dealer immediately, since they were going to close the registration desk at 3pm. I got there at about 2:30. The sales guy said hi from across the room. I don't think we got closer than 10 feet of each other. The finance guy gave me a disinfected pen, I signed the paperwork, gave him the check, and out the door we went. On a dollar/second basis it must have been the fastest transaction ever! |
