lol yeah, however my whole point of this is that if my MPG is going to be relativly the same whether or not i'm driving Sport+ or Efficient...well i might as well always drive in sport+

I think that there probably is another factor that would come into play if you Drive a DCT. It probably shifts to higher gears much faster in efficient mode.

That's what I like about the M2 over the 440i. I can control throttle independent of the aggressiveness of gear changes.

So basically no. The shifting behavior of the DCT can be changed separately from the Efficient/Sport/Sport+ of the throttle/engine. Or at least I'm pretty sure changing that has no effect on when the transmission changes gear.

I guess there is another button for DCT shift speed. I have no idea if it's linked to sport mode at all or not. I only test dove the DCT version for a few minutes, I missed the clutch but the shift speed was impressive.

I'm actually surprised my M2C gets as pretty good mpg considering it's a performance car. In 14 months at 7400 miles I'm averaging 21.7 mpg as a DD mixed City/Highway miles. I drive fairly hard but but smoothly. I only did one 240 miles freeway round trip to Sacramento and back to Los Gatos which average 29 mpg at 75+ mph. My expectations were fairly low because I've been driving M5's for over two decades pretty much the same way and they didn't get 17- 18 mpg.

I daily drive my M2C - Shell 91 - 2 Mile commute to work - still full up once a week with minor fun driving

15-17 mpg average

It's fine as a daily driver, BUT only if you have a short commute

Mine is 12 to 16 miles, depends on the route I take and I average 20+. I must be driving like a granny or something? My car doesn't even reach operating temp until 4-5 miles of driving.

Sport + mode has a hilariously exaggerated throttle tip-in.

Sport + feels to me like 50% pedal is about 80% engine response. Doesn’t seem to accelerate much harder when you press the pedal the remaining 50%!

Sport mode seems about linear, which I like for more fine tuned control, and efficient mode seems to have a lazy throttle tip-in, kind of opposite of sport plus.

I’d like to see the numbers from the engineers. Not likely.

Actually that brings up a good point. Is the difference between all 3 modes just throttle response? In my 230i Sport+ meant traction was off, however i have noticed that the traction light doesnt come on when i do that in my M2C, i have to actually put it in MDM mode using either the M buttons or the traction button.

Today was the first time I went on a somewhat longish highway ride, about 1 hour round trip, on the M2C. According to the trip computer I got about 23.2 mpg with an average speed of 58 mph. This includes local driving to get to the hwy, and then some high rates of speed, aggressive shift etc., but nothing crazy. In Sport mode throughout

Otherwise I've been getting 17mpg on mostly spirited back road driving or errands around town

I switched from efficiency to sport + for almost all of my drives and I went from 20 MPG to 19 MPG. As far as i know I really did not change anything else. Maybe the exhaust burble? Doesn't that inject extra fuel to cause the burble?

It keeps the turbo spooled.

I like efficient best. I love the classic turbo acceleration that scares passengers.

Sport+ when I feel like going to 11. Keep it special.

The M2C with the S55 motor is obviously no Honda Civic in fuel efficiency but BMW has come a long way in making their performance M models less fuel dependent, as showed by the fact none of the turbo-charged M cars offerings was hit with the EPA's infamous Gas Guzzler Tax, which is stipulated by a vehicle with unreasonably low MPGs, in comparison a similar vehicle in its class.

All BMW high-revving, naturally-aspirated of the past were always hit with the EPA tax, it's was almost an inside joke in the E46 M3 community but then turbos came back around and ironically, made M performance cars a little more green and efficient, placing them below the penalty threshold.

So be thankful for small mercies in MPG department..

56k for an M3. How cheap that feels today. I paid 33k for my e46 325i with decent options, I cant imagine you can get a stripped 2 series for that these days...

This exactly. Love the longer spoil sometimes, such a sense of occasion. It’s nice having the throttle response in sport+ when you’re really pushing it on a back road, but otherwise efficient almost all the time.

The E36 M3 started below $40k! When the E46 came out everyone loved it, but it was a much much more expensive car than the one it replaced (though the e36 was partly so cheap because we got a less special engine than the Europeans)

I used a currency calculator to find out what 36k in 1994 would be worth now: 62k...Very close to the price of a M2c.
