Track Setup Q&A - Signature Performance Wheels

Introducing Signature Wheel. This is a feeler post to see how many would be interested in affordable Full Forged track wheel setup for the M2. From this post's assessment, we'll pre-build a dozen sets for quick ordering.

Who are we? We're a group of car enthusiasts that believe in keeping promises and keeping price reasonable.
At Signature, we build precision track wheels that happen to be show stoppers.

JWL/VIA CERTIFIED
HUB CENTRIC
ACCEPT OEM LUG BOLTS AND NUTS
MAX BRAKE CLEARANCE
4-WEEK BUILD / 1-WEEK ARRIVAL

For track use, you want the lightest and strongest wheels with the lowest replacement cost possible. That's where Signature fits into the picture.

Is full forged wheels overkill for track use? No, track usage warm the wheels over 150F. This makes metal softer and more likely to bend/crack. Forged wheels' aluminum are more aligned at the atomic level, making them superior for track abuse. Plus they're lighter, every oz counts.

The M2 Track Wheels Special: The M2 is an excellent platform for the track, but OEM size is a bit too narrow to get the most out of the car.

18inch 1-Piece Monoblock Wheel Package: 18x9.5 ET30 front and 18x10.5 ET45 rear - ~18lbs front and ~20lbs rear
*Recommended Tire Size: 265/35/18 and 295/35/18 rear (tires not included)

19inch 1-piece Monoblock Wheel Package: 19x9.5 ET30 front and 19x10.5 ET45 rear - ~19lbs front and ~21lbs rear
*Recommended Tire Size: 265/30/19 front and 285/30/19 rear (tires not included)

Squared setup will work if you have cambers in front or you vehicle is lowered. Not yet confirmed, but should work based on calculations.

18inch 1-Piece Monoblock Square Wheel Package: 18x10 ET35 Square - ~18lbs
*Recommended Tire Size: 275/35/18 all around (12mm spacers front needed)

We can also do wilder setup to accommodate wider tires by request.

Bottom design is more to my liking.

Prefer 19

If these are for the track then why are you not proposing square sizing? I use spacers only to get square identical wheels.

PM sent. We can build any size/offset, even squared setup for the M2. Newer BMW's ECU don't like square setup very much, a lot of ECU intervention unless you run full DSC off.

Stock's rear tires have larger diameter than the front. When both front and rear are the same diameter in square setup, the computer thinks the rear wheels are slipping so it reduces power. Not ideal if you want to go fast. Plus, when you run square you're limiting the rear tire width based with what the front can accommodate, which is 275 max (R-compound).

Not always, that's how some people end up hitting a wall. Some of the BMW HPDE instructors still run on MDM even. Euro MDM is actually less intrusive than you think, it allows a lot of angles before intervention.

My very conservative estimate is over 50% of the M2 owners never tracked before and only less than 20% of the M2s will ever see the track. So I recommend leaving MDM on the first few sessions. Until you find the limits where DSC lights kicks in, don't take the nannies off especially first time on the track with a new car. Everyone will learn at his own rate, the idea is just to have a good time safely as we don't make any money tracking cars.

I've been tracking for 10 years and have always had DSC off except once or twice. One of those times I overheated the rear brakes on my 1 series because it was 'correcting' for me. So for me at least track equals DSC off. Others can do as they wish.

BTW my M2 has been to the track 4 times since I picked it up earlier this year. The first time was at about 1400 miles just after breakin. So your numbers may be right but I'm the outlier. Plus you are advertising as track wheels so I am a bit confused. In any event beautiful wheels.

That's awesome, we would love to see more M2 owners like you enjoying the car on the track.

Would 18x10 ET35 square with 10mm spacer up front work for 275/35/18 tires? We haven't tested this setup, so we can't advertise it. We also read that lowering or camber would clear the front better with this squared setup.

Can't answer your question. I did a test fitment with a 30 offset and a 265/30/19 on a 10" wheel and it looked like all was well although I didn't drive it. I would probably go 265 with a 30 offset and then gauge whether my next set of tires can be 275s. If not then I stick with the 265s but with a grippier tire than the MPSS.

This is always the trade off debate. I also track my cars 25+ days/year. I admit I am new to the M family so I really appreciate input from this forum. I bought the M2 to drive to the track and back home with a minimum of prep and a maximum of fun(speed). I know the BMW crowd loves a square set up, but most of them tell me it is for tire wear issues first then to aid turn in second. When looking and reading about this car it seems that the car rotates well, especially with nannies off and that reducing the rear, in comparison to the front , this may create more oversteer. So, I am still leaning towards a larger staggered wheel set up, like 9.5-10.5. I don't give a flip about tire wear....I am 65k into the car so tire costs are like the tail wagging the dog. One last point, I also need the nannies to work properly on the way to and from the track, so if I drive home on a square set I loose this feature and piss off the computer. Any thoughts on the above will be appreciated.

To keep the computer happy, the rear tires must be around 2.2% larger than the front.

The staggered setup suggest on my original post would work. For 18, you can do 265/35/18 and 285/35/18 which is a perfect 2.2% ratio. Please email me at bmw@signaturewheel.com to work up you final track configs. I also recommend adding anti-slip knurling bead tread feature below. This prevents the tires from slipping during hard acceleration/braking. When tires slip around the wheels, the setup is no longer balanced.

This technology is trickled down from the F1 teams.
