I was hoping for Tanzanite Blue or Donnington Gray, but Mineral Gray is not a bad option. But what I want to know is if they are going to come out with other choices later on in production.

As far as the numbers I think that ///M is spot on. The horsepower/torque is not going to be as important as the actual feel of the car. Plus we all know that BMW underrates their power figures. If this is a deterrent for those window shoppers, great, more cars for us serious buyers.

everyone has different views which is great. For me I wasn't sure if I would ever goto anything smaller then a M3 then the new 2 series came out and I was impressed. I currently have a M4 but the M2 specs that are coming out look very appealing. Will I leave my M4 for a M2, maybe who knows. The 435 is a great vehicle and more then enough car then one would need but the M4 is def another level. With that in mind I'm sure M will do the same with M2 vs 235.

I'm expecting to see CFRP panels that will reduce weight to 228 levels but with slightly more than M235 power. That's the perfect car.

We should also see more attention to weight saving up front so the car has a perfect 50/50 balance instead of being front-heavy like the M235. All of that combined would make it a much better car.
The challenge for this car is it has to price between the m235i and the m3/4.

They cannot include too much carbon as it won't fit the product line. I think it will weigh the same as the m235i but have the additional power and chassis refinement.

No it won't, the m4 is stated 425 hp and dynos at between 420-435...so the best you can hope for at the wheels, even understated, is 375hp

Obviously we don't have anywhere near the complete details, but so far it looks like even the weight will be a cause for concern for some.
But this is exactly what people say EVERY TIME. Look at the M3/4. When the specs came out, everyone btched and moaned about how it only had 5 more hp than the S65. I love my E92, but I know it would get stomped by an M3/4 almost every time.

I think maybe all our expectations are different. Personally, I don't expect the engine to be the main talking point about this car. What I really care about is that they take the really good 2er chassis, and add the suspension, brakes, diff and EPS from the M3/4. Now THAT, is what makes me salivate.

Wasn't the 1M identical? At the end of the day, it was just an N54 that could be found anywhere. But the combination between the chassis and E9x M3 parts made it magical.
I think what you're seeing now are the 'fake buyers' get filtered out. They were expecting a 2900 lb, 450hp S65-laden CF coated machine. lol
Well, I disagree with this elitist "fake buyer" bullshit, I have to say you're right. I WAS hoping for an 3000lbs, S65, CF laden demon on wheels. Clearly that's not happening. Hence the lack of enthusiasm now. I may now end up getting an M4 next year instead of an M2. We'll see once this is out and there are some honest reviews.
not sure why you ever expected that....really. this car is following the 1M formula...and has been from the beginning. The M235i weighs over 3500 pounds. If you want a 3000 pound M2----I hope you have $125k as that is how much a car that would lose 14% of it's weight would cost after engineering.
Yes. You are right overall, and we all know that. But hopes and dreams are still there. Realistically, they did exactly as expected, like you said. But i've been hoping that they were just pulling the wool over our eyes, and were gonna sucker punch us with an awesome little corner killer with an awesome (even detuned) S55 motor. But, that WAS/IS unrealistic. But, i'm still disappointed. :/

But, we'll see. It's gonna be good regardless. Probably even great. But, i'm selfish....

OP, thank you for the update.

We can speculate on why this car will be a winner or a loser, and folks can complain all day. The safety, the cooling, the drivetrain demands and the design limitations would cause this car to spiral in price like the M3 GTS did in recent years if the car rivals the M4 performance. BMW makes it clear, this car is below the M4 and above a M235i. It will please certain folk between those two cars, who can afford a car in between. Period.

Perhaps the reduced weight and shorter wheelbase, along with a wide track and a mechanical locking diff will make the M2 shine on a very short track. And if so, the M2 will become an instant autocross fantasy car! This is what I think BMW is trying to do with the M2.

Stripped I would expect 55k, and loaded $65k USD OTD. Again, not for everyone, but for someone who is single, drives to the track and is not rich.

This car will have a following.

M2 will look great on any color (better in orange), BUT, my tuned M235i will eat a stock M2 with those factory specs.... I really expected to have at least 400HP stock, not a fan of those numbers

Bmw is really letting me down with no red option. All my old Ms (except my Jerez) all have been red. I feel like that's the best color for all past generations of M models.

Oh shit.... Now you're gonna start it. You're gonna learn like all us 335i guys. Just don't..... Trust me, it's not worth the flailing.

This ^^^

I want Imola Red or Melbourne Red at the very least. Zinno would be a cool comeback.

Not Brilliant or Vermillion though.

I remember some a while back but hasn't the car revealed more lately and dropped camp? Any updated renders?

I am really failing to see your logic here. Why would you leave your M4 for an M2? You obviously don't need the room because you purchased the coupe and not the sedan. You never really saw yourself in something smaller than the 4 series so why go to something not only smaller, but lower in performance. From someone in your situation the M2 specs cannot look appealing.

Proper red: Imola Red, Melbourne Red, goddamnit.

I'd probably take a red or AW.

It might be more fun to drive... just a thought, or something different as people can always want something new after a while

I hope that they keep the price in check. For low $50s, it is an enticing proposition to enter into the M pantheon, but anymore then $55K, I'd rather be looking at an ED, lightly optioned, M3.

I realize it's been "known" for a long time, but the lack of a unique or at least "M-unique" engine is really frustrating. I can deal with the weight if the engine is truly special. I can also deal with a "normal" engine a little more readily if there are significant weight savings included like I expect we'll see by 2020 or so in the form of CFRP or CF/Al body structures in mainstream BMWs.

I really feel we're on the verge of having a much better 2 series in a few years. I believe we are on the edge of the cliff in terms of this dated, heavy, all-metal design for cars and in a few years we will see a whole new ballgame. BMW does now have the largest CF production facility in the world after all... and it is confirmed that the 7 series will be getting significant carbon use in the chassis design. It's only a matter of time before the tech is integrated into every vehicle in the BMW line.

This also means we're probably nearly at the end of the hp war. With lighter vehicles, we will not need the same horsepower to achieve the same performance we are getting now. Imagine a 2900 lb M2 with any engine a few years from now. That's the one I really want. Of course, the option for a manual transmission will probably be gone at that point and that will be the end of BMW for me. I'll never buy another new car when it comes to that (except maybe for my future wife )

ANYWAY, I too find the color choices quite drab and think the power increase over an M235i is fairly lame as well. This feels like a marketing car rather than what an M is supposed to be. I know the M3/4 are big and heavy, but they still feel very M-like to me. They're special the way the E39 M5 was special. They're the new M5 and we need a new M3. I don't think the M2 is that car. Sorry for the rambling, but I do feel a little let down.

However, I suspect I'd quite like it if I drove one and I'd probably be damned close to buying one if I did. Noone else offers a manual trans, RWD, refined package quite like BMW does. It seems like a safe bet to wait it out for the next generation 2 though if you can muster the patience. Then again, I'm not too interested in a four cylinder M as I already have one of those! The aural bliss that is a BMW I6 is something I must have. OK, I'm done. I swear!
