Bunch of youngsters!

The first car I drove was a 1976 Cutlas S with 350 V8, rear wheel drive, no antilock brakes, no traction control, no air bags, run of the mill steal belt radial tires (no snow, no ice, no rain tires, just tires!) and I drove it in the winter to Boston in the snow from an hour away, without a problem! And UP HILL BOTH WAYS! Yes you could get the thing sliding. D'ooh. That's half the fun of winter driving. That car weighed a million pounds too. 'Merican Steel! With all that nice rust!

The tires today are designed to handle wet roads safely. Tires have come a tremendous way in terms of wet road safety and they keep making more improvements. The same is true of the tires on the M2. Look at the tread design. The more inbound part has the water handling setup, while the lateral part has the more shallow tread for handing dry roads. If your friend looks at your tires and only sees the lateral half they will say, "hey you need new tires already." BMW wanted a good tire for traction in wet and dry. Perhaps not for the snow, but certainly BMW wants you to be able to drive this car in the friggen RAIN!

JUST DON"T PUSH THE GO PEDAL TOO FAR DOWN TOO QUICKLY.

For me it begged the question of how hydroplane prone an M2 is compared to other cars? Still trying to figure out the point of this thread.

That's entirely a function of the tyre, nothing to do with the car. It's all about the "land to sea" ratio, or how the tyre moves the volume of water beneath it. Don't remove enough, aquaplaning. Simples.

You kids kill me. Radial tires? Ha! I started out in a 1970 Malibu 307 AT with bias belted tires. Some years we actually had snows mounted, but I learned to drive in Buffalo winters w/o them.

You ROCK, Grandpa! Buffalo has snow year round! Good Old Lake Effect

I am amazed by this thread, people are afraid to drive in the rain WTF? What would they do if they get caught in a downpour? Look for a rest stop with a Safe Space and a mat to use to roll up on the floor and cry?

Mike

(It's all in good fun, there are no Safe Spaces at rest stops, you'll have to go to your local college campus for that, as long as the weather holds up.)

Funny. My first car was a 1955 TBird with vacuum windshield wipers. In heavy rain the roads weren't the problem, vision was. Living in New England you learned how the car reacted to slippery or snowy roads no matter what type car you drove. Today's cars are a dream.

My M3 has the same problem I don't know what it is.

You really have to watch it around the turns. If you make a turn to fast for example it slide out. Even right after a carwash and you just hit the gas a little more than u should.

In my last car E93 M3 this wasn't an issue and I drove it easily on bald tires in the rain...

OT, but am I right in assuming the new PS4S will replace the current PSS as standard equipment for MY2018 M2 LCI?

IMHO quite likely the M2 LCI will still sport the PSS (or Contis).

PS4S is brandnew and the latest top dog - it ain't even supplied yet to tire shops. Goes on sale in 2017 (http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1321620).

Car manufacturers need to go through a validation process - changing tire choices doesn't happen overnight. For example, at the time of the 1M release (May 2011), the PSS were already available. Nevertheless BMW stuck to the initial plan to fit the old PS2 tires. Just too late in the 1M development process for BMW to make the switch from PS2 to PSS (no time and budget to spend on new tests with PSS). Anyways, lots of 1M owners replaced their PS2 with the superior PSS (with the fringe benefit that PSS are cheaper than PS2). The 1M Nürburgring time (08:12) was on PS2.

Moreover, we don't know yet the price difference between the PSS and the PS4S. If it turns out to be pretty pricey, PSS will remain, or eventually an upgrade to PS4 (instead of PS4S). Though PS4S is bound to replace the PSS, I guess that PSS won't be phased out very soon.

Don't compare with the UK. At least, don't compare Texas or California with the UK. I lived in those states for three years and when it rains the roads are like an ice rink. Usually because they are made out of concrete (understandable in TX because of the heat) and soaked with oil and whatever crap seeps out of 30-year old F150's.

I thought it would be impossible to beat the five car wrecks on a ~5-mile stretch of 280 to Cupertino when it rained, but somehow Austin managed to beat that with 8-wrecks in the same distance on Mopac. Every so often TX weather surpasses itself in it's ****ed-upness with freezing rain...

its even less about the road than the fact that at least up here in the Dallas suburbs, most everybody drives like raging a-holes so there is no recovery room if something happens.... I probably see a wreck every 3-4 days, and my commute is only 4 miles - and thats in the dry... raining now, so commute home should be.... interesting.

RWD has its perks, but for inclement weather of any kind I really liked my Quattro.....

If like my past cars. Once the tires hit ~20K they'll start to feel greasy in the rain.

I've driven in torrential rain in Houston in September. No difference for me.

Werd!!!!!

I rode from Poughkeepsie to Minneapolis in the rain. On a 350 two stroke. Yes, I think I was a masochist back then.

When I road raced motorcycles I always prayed for rain. Usually did very well.
