I like the look of the do88 as well - from the stats it seems to be a great balance between cost and performance.

I was worried it was a bit heavy (at 13kg) but its actually 1kg lighter than a csf.

I'm confused though how to categorise it - it is 5.5" (so similar thickness to AA which is classified as a 5") but has a core volume increase of 123% over stock, which is massive.

I have been in touch with do88 and they reckon the flow rate is so high that it won't introduce turbo lag with the stock tune, but I'm concerned that the massive extra volume will cause lag.

Any opinions on this? Do you think it will cause lag without a tune? Or does the fact it flows so well make up for this?

Intercooler is here https://www.do88.se/en/artiklar/bmw-f20-f30-f87-performance-intercooler.html

Similar to csf they have crammed in alot of rows.

Great list! 😀

I'm thinking similar (over a period of time).

Please let us know the feel of the do88 compared to stock ic (in terms of lag etc) before the mhd flash?

Thanks.

My friend mentioned losing boost pressure when upgrading the FMIC. I am on a stage 2 with upgraded cat, exhaust, charge pipe. I thought there would be loss if i was stock and installing lets say a CSF because its one of the larger ICs. Any thoughts?

Additional question, what if I was to switch between my stock and stage 2 tune would a CSF IC still be good to have or would I need to switch back to stock IC?

Any time you get a bigger intercooler, there will be a pressure loss but when you are on stage 2 the pros (lower intake air temps) outweighs the cons (higher pressure drop)

If you go back to stock map then the cons will outweigh the pros

In your case i would recommend a 5" intercooler like Wagner EVO I, VRSF HD or Active Autowerke. It would work well with either the stock map or a stage 2

Since my ATM IC would not fit with my Evolution Racewerks charge and TIC pipes, I decided to shell out the extra $$$ for their Type 3 anodized IC that's got a 650hp core. I spoke extensively with Fred, the owner of ER, about this because I needed to be sure that his IC will be good for my Pure Stage 2 & TTFS/XDI setup. I've attached some pictures for your viewing pleasure.

One of them is a pic of the AA IC next to the ATM IC.

I'm about to take delivery of '17 M2 and I'm keen to get started on the mods. Car will probably never be tracked and will only be driven hard in short bursts as opposed to prolonged sessions (cops in Australia are ruthless). I'll be doing decat DP, intercooler + charge pipe and BM3 stage 2 93oct/98ron tune with no other mods planned.

I know 6 inch intercoolers are usually recommended for those mods but due to the lack of track work and nature of driving will a stepped 5 inch intercooler be suitable? Don't really want to go bigger and introduce unnecessary lag if I can avoid it.

Thanks

the 5" upgrade will be a major improvement over stock, so if you are asking if you can run it with your mods the answer is yes you can.

It will not perform as well as the the 6" even for short street pulls, all it takes is one pull for the temps to go up.

If your car is FBO you will not notice any lag with the 6" intercooler.

Mike, what would you suggest for my situation:

- 2017 M2 6MT (N55)
- Akra 300 CEL Sport Cat DP
- Akra Exhaust (planned)
- BMS charge pipe (planned)
- DV+ (planned)
- No tune planned
- Stock intake
- Driven hard, incl hard canyon runs, occasional track day

I like the Wagner product line because it comes in black.

Thoughts?

I run the Wagner Evo2 Competition and don't notice a difference in lag between Stock, Stg1, or Stg2 tunes.

Hi Mike,

When you say there will be no lag with FBO, please can you clarify if you mean FBO without a tune, or FBO with a tune?

Cheers.

Definitely with tune ... If you do not have a tune you should get a 5" intercooler

WideT,

If you are concerned about lag due to upgraded FMIC, I can recommend - 1st hand - adding Pure or FTP hi flo inlet pipe [removes a restriction on the inlet side of the turbo] to offset the lag.

Works very well, provided you are choosing the right FMIC ie one with low pressure losses between inlet and outlet.

FWIW, I had Wagner Comp Evo II on my stg 2 JB4'd M135i and will be fitting CSF to my BM3'd M2.
