How to un-tune a car you bought tuned?

If you bought a tuned car from a dealer and you are trying to un-tune it, what's the best way to go about it? Can you bring it to a dealer to flash back to stock? Or would either BM3 or MHD have a stock map that you can flash?

Thanks in advance.

Dealers can only really perform updates, if there's no update, then the dealer software will not overwrite it (as it sees no reason to). In short, dealer can't always return it completely to stock.

Esys with an ENET cable can.

Why are you looking to return it to stock? You will never be able to get warranty coverage for the powertrain without a fight as dealers can tell if a car has been tuned (this is my understanding), even if it has been returned to the stock software.

Are you unhappy with the current tune, or do you just want to reduce stress on the engine? Depending on what you want, the answer may vary.

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking to go back to stock mainly so I can pass emissions as my car failed the readiness test.

If you get a new ISTEP update from the dealer or do it yourself then it will erase any tune and bring it back to factory spec.

MHD does have an option to flash back to stock. However i'm not sure whether a license is required to perform that function.

I would look into where or not you are running a catless DP as to the reason why you failed your emissions test.

cheers

+1

Then you force it to write a new ISTEP.

You need a license for that, and the stock ecu files which he probably doesn't have.

If it was a BM3 tune, you may be able to reach out TO proTUNING Freaks and get them to transfer the license with the stock map, or at least let you know how to revert it.

Do you know what mods were done to the car? Depending on what was done, the car may not run right without said tune.

Thanks all. Not sure what tune is on it, which is why I'm curious but not 100% confident that buying a BM3 or MHD license will help bring the car back to stock tune.

The car has Dinan big turbo, Dinan intercooler and stock cat with M Performance Exhaust, which I think will run fine with stock tune. Another option I think is to go Dinan Stage 2 Flash route, which I think is 50 state legal for emissions, but I was hoping for a more convenient option in terms of ability to switch between maps.

Not to revive a threat from the dead, but I am having this issue as well.

I purchased a car that has down pipes without a check engine light. Therefore presumptuously the car is tuned. The previous owner did not do this. I have no idea what tune is on the car but I would like to remove it and put it all back to stock. n63TU engine. any ideas on how to at least find out what tune it is?

Good call. I emailed bootmod3 and they don’t have my VIN. What other common n63 tuning companies could I email?
Or maybe a better question is how I can just revert to stock map?

BM3 and MHD, and some other tuners can be reverted to stock easily with esys or other factory programs.

I have noticed that ECUTek causes a huge mess, because they block any type of overwrite with their custom rom. Flash to stock attempts may then cause a lot of issues.
