Coincidence or Tradition?

I was been searching some info about the first M1 ,M2, M3 , M5 and M6 , found out that the first M1 (and last) had a bmw engine with the M88 code. Then the first M3(E30) had yes the S14 engine but it was based again on the M10 block . Then the First ever M5(E28) and M635Csi (E24) had as well the M88 engine. Their first M2 (F87) did same thing took the bmw engine block and M modified everything else as well the engine . Is it a coincidence that on their first M1,M2,M3,M5,M6 they used on all a bmw engine ? Well its the block but again. Is it just coincidence or is it just a tradition? :

I have found that interesting and wanted to share it with you.
