Outdoor Storage Security

I will need to temporarily store my M2 outdoors (on a driveway). Although it’s a pretty safe neighborhood, I’m still a bit conscious about such a nice car being a target. I have a motion light on the driveway and a camera.

What have your experiences been like and what do you think are some reasonable security measures? Does the OG have any vulnerabilities that should be addressed? Steering lock perhaps? I’m also reading about Faraday cages for indoor storage of the key fob. I’d rather not do a car cover.

My M2 has been outside all its life. No porblem as long as you lock the car.

If you have Comfort Access just wrap your key in some kitchen alfoil, will prevent theft via a signal amplifier/booster.

I don't think US cars have comfort access. that said, I missed the good o days that BMW had a code for their cars that function as an ignition kill switch.

Mine does. It came as part of the Executive Package. But if OP is worried about that, there are key pouches on Amazon or whatever that act as little Faraday cages. Might be a bit tidier (if no more effective) than the aluminum foil method.

I also have comfort access except I have never activated it. I don’t know why I should activate it.

Make sure your motion lights are set to more than five minutes!!

Thieves often wait for a one minute reset before proceeding with any attempts.

You also might want to get a nice car cover and throw a cable underneath it and lock it on the driver side

It’s already activated Dan.

That’s what allows your doors to unlocked when you grab the handle.

You must be talking about activating the transponder, which connects with BMW assist…

The system already has your contact information. If you have an accident, they will contact you while you’re in the car.
And they will notify emergency services of the severity of the accident and give them your actual GPS location and disbatching emergency responders to the scene.

No. You can have the car Auto Unlock when you approach the car without touching the door handle. To activate you hold down the unlock button on the key and simultaneously hit the BMW logo button three times.

Does that unlock both doors?

Depends on how you set up unlock in the iDrive.

From factory, F series CA works by default by having key on you and touching door handle. On F series with CA option, CA can't be disabled.

This auto unlock, by contactless remote proximity, is an additional feature of CA from ca. MY 2017 onwards.

Put up a very obvious security camera. Sometimes the possibility of being recorded is enough to deter bad behavior. SURVEIL YOUR NEIGHBORS!

Yeah, neighbors do weird things…

My neighbor comes over and looks at our electrical panel as if it’s deep insight to our lifestyle

Completely strange behavior

But you still have Comfort Access, eg with key in your pocket you can unlock/lock door(s) by touching door handle. It's this option that thieves can use to steal the car.

That’s why both my keys are in faraday cases

I also use the app to lock the car vs the key itself

I have the factory optioned alarm, locking the car via the app doesn’t activate the alarm, seems stupid!

Thanks for all the replies! Mine is a 2017 and I do have Comfort Access and want to use it. I will pick up one of these Faraday cages for storing my keys indoors.

My 21 comp doesn't activate the alarm via the app, only locks the doors. Maybe they changed it over the years?
