Cars are just not that loud for the most part. I could understand a ban on Harley's with straight pipes. I don't need some asshat rattling my windows from a mile away at 8 AM on a Sunday.

Actually I think that the effect will be quite the opposite. Stock exhaust will become louder if modifications can't make them louder. Otherwise people won't buy these type of cars..
This should prevent manufacturer's practice of offering shitty stock exhausts and better aftermarket (m performance) ones..

I'd assume there is already a db limit on stock exhausts? I don't know the numbers though.

I also wonder if this is a total ban on all "valve technology", even ones from factory? Since if you put it into Sport mode it basically keeps the valves open most of the time.

Does anyone have any other source for this information? I cannot find a mention of it anywhere, not a peep. Surely there’s a car site out there that would’ve reported on this considering it affects all aftermarket exhausts?

The exhausts are not legal in Europe since from the coming months onwards you are not allowed to offer a button in the interior that switches to an exhaust mode that is louder than before. Also you are not allowed to make an aftermarket exhaust that is louder than the stock exhaust.

New rules in Europe which means that all systems currently on the market and which are coming cannot be sold anymore. This means that the upcoming BMW M2 M Performance exhaust will not be sold in Europe until the system is made legal or complies to rules and regulations. That means that you would buy an exhaust that is not louder and would cost you a lot. So I could see BMW says, we are not going to offer it. Too much hassle, for nothing.

Additionally, Europeans will not and cannot upgrade their exhausts to make it louder if they want to keep driving a car legally. Germany as a country is in the forefront of this now with the though TUV rules, but other countries will follow as well. It is a shame, but the world is moving into a direction of making cars less loud and also more environmentally friendly. If you have any more information on this, then please feel free to share it below, but this is what I discussed today and the news is out in the open.

MR
Eh. This exact same stuff is introduced every couple of years it's nothing new—-dating back to 2005. It doesn't have any real effect. Don't buy the propaganda. They will tweak it and release it again shortly like they always do. They want you to spread this rumour so they can clear out the old inventory...typical carmaker "gossip".

I'm quite sure anyone who wants a PE can buy one. They just wont install it from the factory...

All they need to do is just start making the M cars louder stock.
Problem solved.

I am currently trying to source the M Performance Exhaust from anywhere in Europe but seems like an impossible task.

All the dealers (that I've contacted so far) say that there's absolutely no inventory whatsoever left and they are unaware of when or if there will be an updated version in the future. (For what it's worth, based on the info I've read, I personally also believe that there will be one at some point.)

If anybody can advise me where to find one inside the EU (trying to avoid ridiculous custom fees and taxes), I'd be more than happy!

Thx already in advance.

Unfortauntely we’re absorbing all EU laws for the meantime (I believe including transition period). The chances of a law like this getting reviewed post Brexit is incredibly slim too. I still struggle to believe this is real though, waiting for more evidence.

BMW, just include the M-Performance Exhaust as the stock option. You're welcome BMW; I know, I'm a genius. Let me know when you want me to take the job as head of the M division, and we can start the development of cost effective, environmentally safe, light weight M cars with hydraulic steering and driver focus.

I assume they could probably still sell it as an "off road only" part but I haven't actually read the specific details so I could be wrong.

I thought they got around this with the little red button in the trunk to active the MPE for EU cars. So now the law states you cannot have a loud exhaust at all, even if it has a quite mode?

Almost happenned. The laws are on the books just not enforced.

I'm talking about the removal of emissions equupment which also make the exhaust louder.

So make the default exhaust mode loud and call the button "Quiet mode".
