Diff or DCT whining F87 M2

Hi guys,

New // M owner and some issues with a noise on my 2016 M2.
Only 36 000 kms and can’t stop to think about this famous whining noise at low speed under 10 mph. (Or when i stop the car at a stop for example)

I’ve read some post on F80 m3 and f87, where we understand its normal.
(Because of the //M diff)

Others guys say that Come from the DCT .

For information, My rear diff is a new one and assembled in my bmw garage. I had the noise with the old diff and now with thé new one.

Have you some informations or it’s really normal ???
I’ m little bit lost and stressed.

Thanks and Bonne journée 🇫🇷

Hey man. Can elaborate on the severity of the noise?

And also, why do you have a new dif?

There is an expected whining noise(DCT) at low speeds, or when you let off the gas. Also there is expected dif noise as well when letting off the gas or when lightly accelerating. But these are all very faint noises. If you are hearing anything excessive, there’s a problem.

It’s even stated in the owners manual about this, as i can imagine many new owners had concerns.

Tbh I wish the whining noise was louder! I love hearing the DCT whining noise. It’s part of the raw m2 experience

Thank you for your answer !

I’ll post a video to show you. It’s very slight noise.

My first diff had a leak on a joint.

For sure. If it’s quiet, Would be surprised if it’s picked up on the mic. I had the same concern when I picked up my m2.

We can hear the slight noise on the 6th second of the video and on the 40th

To your point of view, it will be the dct noise as tou said ?

Usually the added acoustic noise in a sports car is due to the more rigid structure of the transmission and differential casing. This is coupled with lower compliance bushings that are used for a more responsive driveline. The M2 does a fantastic job at managing NVH considering the capabilities and subjective dynamics of the vehicle in my opinion.

Take a read through a Nissan GTR owners manual. A good page or two explaining the clunks and noise that is considered “normal” operation.
