The other day a guy next to me revved his engine at a light. We were not at the front. I revved back. He just wanted to hear the pops up close.

I overheard a different sort of shout-out just yesterday. The kids were home from school with head colds yesterday. The 10-year-old was playing a racing game (Asphalt 8) on the iPad. I overheard some cute comments from them as I was working from home:
10-year-old: "This is like Daddy's. Only, this is an M3 and his is an M2!" and moments later… 7-year-old: "Yeah, his is a better color!" 10-year-old: "But Daddy would never drive like THIS." (Followed by tire screeching and glass shattering noises.) |

I've had my M2 for 3.5 months and I'm in the same boat. nobody seems to look twice at my M2 (even with M performance exhaust) and that's fine.
my white Audi SQ5 is the king of stealth. I've driven way too fast past cops and they never notice me. hopefully the M2 will be the same way. |

I've only had one person do that. He honked his horn in traffic to get my attention and gave me a thumbs up. Interesting that he was driving a Mercedes.

The only people that seem interested in mine are the kids at my daughter's school when I pick her up in it. They always want me to rev it so they can hear the pops, lol.

Lots of thumbs up from other BMW guys in SoCal. My first drive in the M2 an E92 M3 gave me a thumbs up out the window from across the street. Its cool that a select group seem to appreciate it a lot.

Thumbs up frequently, and a lot of people take a second look here in Houston.
Also a few blow hards at the light - I generally oblige up to the speed limit - including one guy in a Maclaren!! |

It’s a family car!
From a few months back in the summer:
We were taking a drive along Skyline Blvd in the SF Bay Area for my birthday and stopped at Alice’s Restaurant for lunch. We parked near the restaurant and I hopped out of the car. A guy nearby me gaving me a knowing nod as if to say, “Now that’s a nice car!” Then my wife got out of the passenger side and his knowing glance changed subtly to, “You’re doing juuuust fine, sir!” And then my wife pulled the front seat forward and kid #1 popped out. At this, the guy’s eyes widened and he turned to his buddy and gestured at the kid getting out of the M2. Finally — and here’s the really good part — I pulled my seat forward and kid #2 hopped out. At this, the guy turned back to his friend and exclaimed loudly, “Seeeeeeee, I’ve been trying to convince my wife that the M2 is a family car! Seeeeee!” |

My R8 Spyder got too much attention for my liking.
My LBB M2C gets attention mostly for the color which is cool with me. Out of all the BMWs I've owned the 1M in Valencia Orange got the most attention... |

from my experience
458 > GTR > GT3 > F87 > F80 my 458 was black. if it was red or yellow the attention and amount of people at stop lights or gas stations saying 'hey how bout we trade hehehe' would have been unbearable. you always notice people in your rearview pulling out the camera phone. GTR attracts jdm fanboys like nothing else. way more attention than my gt3. f87 seems to get more attention than my f80. but that may be due to the exhaust and gold wheels. both cars were silver. me personally i've always noticed f87s more than f80 or f82s... just looks more aggressive and i almost never see 2 series on the road in general compared to the tons of 3/4 series.

On occasion some people will strike little conversation up which is fun. I get some thumbs up, nods, and revs now and then.
Seems some know the M2 from video games. I don't know which, not up on that.

I pulled out of the garage this morning while the neighborhood was still quiet. I was on the way to the carwash and to pick up a book at the bookstore (yes, a real paper and ink book ).
Soon a message came over CarPlay and Siri read it aloud to me. It put a wide grin on my face. It was from my wife, relating a comment from son #2 that he’d made as I was backing out the car and pulling away down the street: |

It has been an eye-opener. I have owned so many Japanese sports cars over the decades here in Tokyo. You name it, I've likely owned, sourced, driven or sold one... and nobody ever really cared.
But since getting the M2, things are very different. People immediately think you have money. You get loaded questions about income, people stare and kids point at it but as a gaijin it often feels uncomfortable as if the peeps have some sort of incredulity that I, a foreigner, have been able to afford "a Euro". The funniest part is the dude in the new Prius or Crown next to me with the longing gaze doesn't understand I only paid $18k for it... most likely half what he did for his car. Wish I had one in LBB!! |
