oil temp recommendation to start hammering
Hi all,
Just completed my break in period. In my A45 AMG, there was a light that started as on color and changed to a different color when the engine was warm enough to be hammered. I'm sorry but I can't recall which light was that and what were the colors (One of them was white). In the M2, when I switch the view in the drivers console to oil temperature, the gauge is at 70 till it gets there. Meaning, I can't tell when it is at 50, 60 and 70. Only when it passes the 70. Is there another gauge that tells what's the engine temperature? What is the preferred temperature to start hammering it? Thanks |

I drive with an egg under my right foot until the oil temp is 170 F. I never hammer it until at least 200 F.
M2 Comp has a built in oil temp gauge. I have noticed that with MDM on the oil temp runs about 20 degrees F. less than with MDM off. I think it is to allow for hard driving. Anyone else notice this? Edit: Actually I found out that the oil temp change is triggered by the Sport+ mode and not MDM. I searched the M3/M4 forum and found that this is actually common knowledge in their forum. I wait for 89*C - 90*C, my m2 never gets any hotter under gentle driving so after it hits that I'm ready to go.

Yes M2 Comp is the same interior as LCI except for the individual M adjustments buttons near the shifter and the ones on the steering wheels.

The thermostat behaves differently depending on drive mode. Reason being: helps with fuel atomization/combustion dependent on driving more. Working as designed.

It's more of a "range" - I believe it when people say it's fine when the needle starts moving (temps are pretty close to operating temps at that point), but in my mind that's not as good as waiting until operating temp (~200 F).
You probably will never notice the difference though, so just do what is comfortable for you. Or, more realistically, what traffic conditions dictate - if you *need* to overtake and your needle is just barely moving, it's fine to hammer it for a few seconds. But if I were doing a long pull, I'd probably wait till it's around 200F. |
