Low audio volume w/ connected to phone

If I have the stereo volume turned to about 50% when I’m listening to the radio, the Harmon Kardon stereo is decently loud. However, if I leave the volume at 50% and connect my iPhone via USB or Bluetooth, the audio is barely loud enough to hear. Only when you turn the stereo almost all the way up does it compare to the radio volume at 50%.

I’ve checked to ensure that it’s not an issue with my phone, as it does the same thing with other people’s phones connected. My friend who also has an M4 says that my HK stereo seems to be quiet overall compared to his car and other BMW coupes.

Has anyone else had this issue? I do have ASD coded off, and I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it, but it seemed the same when it was coded on. Could it be an amplifier issue, or is this just normal?

I have similar issues with the phone volume needing to be almost at full blast.

I use a USB cable and volume is good. I do need to turn it up a little but not much.

I had the same problem when connected over Bluetooth. This is what "forced" my hand into using Apple CarPlay, as accidentally switching to another audio source after turning up the volume happened far too often. Nothing like a blast of ear piercing sound to wake you up in the morning.

You either have to plug it in via USB or have Apple CarPlay to get full usable volume.

I haven't yet activated Apple CarPlay, and I plan to at my next service, but I do always have my phone connected via the USB and still have the low volume issue. Will ask my dealer about it to see what their thoughts are.

On an iPhone, try this:
Settings -> Music.
Turn off:
- "Volume Limit"
- "Sound Check"
- "EQ"

Not sure that all are necessary, but this is how I had my phone set up and I didn't have any volume issues.
Don't have my car back from ED so I can't test to see which are necessary.

Then I am wrong about the USB.

Completely sucked until CarPlay was active.

I believe anytime you use standard Bluetooth to connect a phone to an audio device the phone volume is linked to the device volume.

When my iPhone 7s is connected to USB Audio and pandora, the volume slider on my phone is greyed-out and shows the phones volume is around 55% turned up from mute. That must explain it.

Which makes sense because i have my volume in my M2 turned up to like 85-90% capability to be able to get the full Harmon kardon sound with USB connected

I have the same issue playing music from my phone. You literally need to almost max out the volume to get decent sound whether you use the USB or Bluetooth, Not a problem with the radio though.

My brother has a 3 series with HK and music from the phone sounds great.

I should ask a simple question...
Raise your phones volume while you are listening to bluetooth music.
Ensure you hit "OK" on the loud volume hearing damage prompt if you are on android
the Cars volume and Phone volume work together, if 1 is low they will both be low

Same problem here. I also have this issue when connecting to other Bluetooth devices too such as my soundbar. I believe it's an issue with iPhone Bluetooth. The phone volume is always 100%. Would hate to have to use USB cable in the car.

I posted it about this shortly after I got my car as well. It's just how it is unfortunately.

Mosely Thanks for the link. What are you currently doing for an audio solution?

Ended up just living with it. The convenience of bluetooth is worth more than the hassle of hooking up the USB every time I get in, even though that seems minor. I find that when sitting at a light or low speeds with windows up, the sound is okay, its windows down or moving faster where it just feels drowned out.
