BMW Makes a Return to Car & Driver's 10 Best List w/ the M2 Competition

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW is back on Car and Driver's 10 Best List after its first loss last year in 20+ years when the Giulia and Audi RS3 won over any positions from the M2 and M240i that could be earned. The M2 Competition, has regained its position back on the list, beating out the RS3.

Now it's got a "revised anti-roll-bar". It just keeps getting better.

First review to cite revised dampers and spring rates, which I definitely believe to be the case. I agree, ride is considerably improved.

As this is the unofficial M2C / Camaro group I went to read about the latter but couldn't seem to find it. I do like that Mustang, but just a bit too big for my tastes.

Part numbers are the same though. Seems unlikely based on all the other information we have.

Different weight with the same springs will give different characteristics. From all the reviews I read, seen it seems the additional weight had a positive effect on the handling of the car.

Exactly, imo it's not only the carbon brace under the bonnet, the M2C really feels more planted, less bumpy(esp.rear end) , even more balanced than OG M2's ride...

Dunno what they did to the chassis...

And with 4 persons in it OG M2 still felt rather bumpy, so what about the gained weight making the ride better? No idea...

Cheers

Maybe not only how much but where the weight was added. In the end less weight is better is a rule of thumb, I have to believe the engineers in BMW are doing real engineering and even though no part numbers change something else is different. All reviews point to a better handling/ride than OG M2.

Not many have tested it back to back with a stock OG M2 though. I’m sure there’s some difference from the brace and weight distribution, but it seems hard to explain.

Not saying it’s imagined, but even for ZCP F80s they did rev the part numbers.

It may be true they secretly modified the parts without changing the part numbers, but that seems like something a German quality manager would quit over.

The software changes could have something to do with it, but it seems hard to imagine given that the car has passive dampers.

I would say that C&D are not my first choice for absolute technical accuracy. They probably get their info from a BMWNA pdf, and BMWNA has demonstrated they are clueless on technical details many times.

I've only had my M2C for a few weeks, but I find the ride quality to be very reasonable, especially once I moved to the 763M wheels. I don't find the interior build quality to be that bad either. It's a notch below Audi levels, but still very good. There is too much black plastic around the center console/ gear shift/ steering wheel trim piece. It's an easy fix with the carbon alcantara interior kit and the carbon steering wheel trim piece. The new seats are a big upgrade and I'm quite fond of the blue/ orange perforations.

I test drove both back to back when I bought mine and there are definitely differences. I actually preferred the ride/handing (and weight) of the 2018.

IMO the suspension on the M2C is stiffer and you can notice the increased weight. I thought for sure there were spring, damper and likely sway bar differences. Definitely more going on than just increased weight and that carbon brace. (I'd be very surprised if the damping and spring rates were unchanged)

I own a 6MT 2017 M2 with stock suspension and I was able to test drive a 2019 6MT M2C a few weeks ago. I could immediately feel the difference in the handling of the M2C. Feels more planted (even though I have Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 on my own car) and the turn-in is very direct and sharp; the front end feels virtually non-existent. Felt amazing honestly. I'm waiting for the CS or for the M2C to be available with dynamic suspension and carbon roof to make the switch. Fantastic improvement, not only on the engine aspect

That M2 comp. sure is tempting. If it weren't for me not wanting to give up the interior space and adjustable suspension I have in the F80 M3, I would have signed the dotted line and traded my car on release date of the M2 comp. That M2 is one heck of a car though!

There's a very noticeable difference between the adaptive suspension in our F80s and the M2C suspension. M2C is much harsher than the M3 in any setting.

Which is why I prefer to drive my M2C

You could be feeling new tires VS not new tires differences.

New tires grip better. A test drive is no where near enough for a comparison.

You need day in , day out on a variety of roads.

Tests drives always skew the brain because it's new and all the components, including tires are all brand new.
