I don't know man. IF, they had plans for m2 comp with s55 when they make the m2 in 2016, then yes, for this particular model, it is inadequate. Switch to S55 engine is not an technical challenge they broke through, it is a marketing stratage.
We all heard nylon stocking companies purposefully made their products inadequate to ensure a steady increase on sales.
Not trying to argue, Just saying, sometimes companies do make decisions seems make no sense, but profitable.
Still, love to drive any given M2, can't wait for mine later this year.

And since the S55 has been on the market for a few years now, I'm sure there is a tune/piggyback that's already sitting on a shelf somewhere.. 450hp/TQ easily, (from the back) of the dealer lot
Why no S55 engine with all M2 Competition bells 'n whistles in the 2016 M2 ?

I posted a couple of thoughts in the dedicated thread (see post #1483 here).

Believe they wanted to hit a price point, which is evident in very few options and interior perks.

Saw this S55 display beside the LCI M2 in Toronto. Coincidence?

I'm happy with my 'old' M2. It's an early prod. car. There will probably be an 18-20k difference in price, old to new. That goes a long way in aftermarket parts. I never run out of brakes, I've changed the seats, which really helps when tossing the car around. I like the balance. The only reason I could see the S55 benefit is on some long straights on track. IMO.

Of course it was also in the middle of 4 M cars, I remember M2 in front with M3 & M4 behind, can't remember which was beside the M2, probably an M6?

But IMHO the instrument panel welcome logo is genuine.

I like the red starter button - although, given the launch color of LBB, having a blue one would be cool too (I think IND already did that).

Artemis:

I am surprised BMW didn't change the M2 logo on the trunk boot, other than to make it black (like other ZCP models) - the difference here is that the M2C is a whole new model, not an upgraded one. I thought we'd see an extra C or something...

In a faraway galaxy of the M3 kind, the RHD version of the E46 M3 Coupé with the Competition Package sold in the UK was officially given the "M3 CS" designation. However, this model did not contain "M3 CS" badging of any kind, nor did it differ from its LHD "ZCP" counterpart in any significant way.

The S55 M2 replaces the N55 M2. Only one M2 for now. If BMW decides to add a limited edition M2 hardcore version as final curtain call for the F87 M2 in 2019/2020, they can still add something next to the "M2" badge.

By the way, recently forum fellow beppeM3+123d came across this F87 M2 design (latest ASAP file downloaded from the aftersales portal BMW server): it features ///M mirrors and a bonnet suggesting a powerdome. Hm, what's cooking inside the ///M kitchen ?

Compare with this aftermarket one:

^^^They're cooking a CSL, IF the Competition continues to sell as well as the original M2 did.

They did. You will see it when they unveil it. Remember the poll we had.

Can't really tell from the leaked pics, but I'm guessing it would be option 1 of your poll, "Competition under M2 without overrun"? You can tell us now, the jig is up.

I think I saw a raised word written under M2 in one of the photos, might that be Competition...
