Yes, you can get one from your local AAA for $20 plus whatever they charge to have photos taken there, if you don’t bring your own photos.

I've had an active one every time I drive in Europe and have never needed it. Car rental companies certainly don't ask for it. I think you can survive without it...but no harm in getting it.

i was in Greece 2 weeks ago and got denied at the Hertz counter coz i didnt have the international license. went to the counter next to them and they gave me a car.
hertz said its apparently a new EU law since 1st of May that US needs an international license. they said its a 10,000 euro fine if you get stopped by the popo.

1. I'll take that with a grain of salt and a bottle of Greece.

2. Glad I have one that's good for a couple more years.

OP, there's one company that does them online...I think you can upload a picture and money and they do it for you...based up in the Bay Area...Google is your friend.

Sounds like total BS to me.

I rent cars in France every 6 months, and have done it through several of the major agencies. I have never had any problem whatsoever using my US license in France. I have no idea about Greece, but I would bet that Germany is just like France.

You could always google this or call your intended car rental company and ask them.

I rent cars in Germany several times a year (just turned an M4 rental in today) and never had anything other than a US drivers license. I have also done Euro delivery.

I have also been though a sobriety checkpoint and was never asked for more than my U.S. license.
