BMWs joining forces with Toyota seems appropriate with their current direction. They can race the active tourer against the Prius on the Nurburgring and build their hideous SUVs. I think I'll go find a nice broken-in 911 to cozy up in and turn out the lights on Vierzylinder.

End of coupes means no more BMWs for me. I wonder if my M2 will be my last BMW.

I'll just buy a Porsche if I want a sports car moving forward

It's not a difficult decision to keep my current M2 anyways after seeing the next 2er mule

Next 2 series will be bigger and not as good as current generation M2.

I’ve been resisting a 911 as it makes me feel a little douchey. I’m not a track star so I feel like a poser when I’m in one. If the next gen M2 is a disappointment I guess I’ll just have to get over my self-consciousness.

Not to worry, Porsche certainly hasn't been immune to the creeping spread. 911s in their more pedestrian forms have found themselves possibly more comfortable in the GT category as opposed to track predators.

From the pre-production pictures you can tell the G87 M2 will be bigger than existing F87 M2.

That can't be all it takes to determine that one is a better car than the other, because in that case, my e36 M3 and Z4M is better than your M2.

Yes, I understand it'll be bigger and potentially heavier too, but that doesn't offset the fact that the G generation EPS has evolved, you're getting an S58 with 3 pedals (big deal for me) and probably more performance.

I've got my eyes closely on a G87 LCI as the last piece of the puzzle, especially if it'll be the last manual M offered. But with none of us having driven the car, absolutely no one can declare the F87 a clear winner, although it might end up being the case.

I'm keeping expectations low. F87 is arguably of the 10 best cars BMW has ever made...maybe top 5. Its a pretty high standard to exceed, so I wouldn't be surprised if the G series leaves something to be desired.

Either way, excited to see what they come up with and will definitely give it a chance.

I completely agree with you. F87 will go down as one of the best cars in the last 2 decades IMO, and the fact that it was priced the way it is still blows my mind. The Competition model fights far above it's weight.

Yea we'll see what happens with G87, still 2 years away and LCI is even further. I'm personally very curious to drive an S58 paired with a 6MT in the M3/4. If that's not great for me, then expectation for the G87 will drop significantly.

G87 M2 LCI may not be here until 2026 or so.

Here's my nitpick about the G87: The S58 has a redline that's about 400 RPM lower than the S55. On the one hand, who cares because it makes way more power, but on the other hand you will always have the knowledge that your engine got nerfed so BMW could potentially mate it to a torque converter.

It's honestly hard for me to fathom how BMW could be so absolutely successful with the M2, I mean, it rivals the E46 for sure, which is obviously their most successful car ever, and then they change it.

I'll just never understand that.

I have a feeling that reviewers will complain about a lack of DCT transmission.

Even with a likely increase in size, look at the increase in weight of the G80/82 M3/M4? Almost 500 lbs per model and just under 4000 lbs.

I would think if the G87 M2 was somehow similar in size/weight of the F87, they would have to seriously detune the S58 to avoid cannibalization.

Unfortunately every new generation is bigger and heavier and that is not unique to BMW.

Echoing what others have said, the M2 will likely be the last BMW I buy. Every announcement BMW make these days just seems to take them yet another step away from what I look for in a car. My next car will likely be a Porsche but who knows, other manufactures continue to surprise - Jaguar, Alfa, Lotus etc. I'm keeping my eyes wide and my options open.
