So 10% of 12000 is 1200 miles, simple. I'm sure it's just a one-distance-fits-all-guess.

Mine was run in after 400 or 500 brisk miles to get the rings bedded, that's it. But ended up waiting to 1000 miles to get the oil out which was more about spare time than anything else.
I suspect it is a balance between annoying the owner with a return trip to the dealer and the fact that is really should be done. I think most engine builders would say the oil should be done way before 1,200 miles - but could you imagine how many people would be annoyed by having to return to the dealer after 200 or so miles?

And regarding the rear diff - I don't know how many miles it needs before it has let go of its shavings - but I suspect it is before 1,200 miles.

I suspect Accounting/Engineering/Marketing all play a role here - and the Accounting for SURE in terms of the standard oil change interval per BMW - since, at least here in NA, it is paid for by BMW. Lots of interesting articles on how the BMW maintenance intervals all got extended when BMW started paying for them.

Ha, I guess a dipstick would be kind of helpful for using a fluid extractor. As you can tell I don't even have my M2C yet...

Disrespect not intended towards your SA, but I do not have faith in most of them. Personally, I wouldn't go beyond it and didn't; 1003 miles for me.

I do not think a special break in oil is used... however, if it was leave it in for the mileage the manufacturer recommends.

I'm sure BMW engineers just guessed at 1,200 miles
My SA has serviced all my BMWs (4) since 2003. His customer service skills are superior/impeccable, but you are probably correct. He's not really a "motorhead"/enthusiast like us on this forum. I will ask him to explain why he thinks going past 1,200 is better. My odometer was right on 1,200 when I pulled in for service (yeah, I know, anal me!)😎👍👌
I'll tell you this from the F80 side. If you miss your 1200 mile service by more than 300 miles, you will take a hit if you ever tried to trade it in to BMW or sell it to an enthusiast on the forum. BMW cannot CPO the car that has missed the 1200 service by more than that amount. Selling to enthusiasts will not work because that know about the service and automatically you are sending a red flag that you don't care about your car (which is not true, but good look convincing someone of that). I was finding used F80s for 2-7k below market, and thought it was peculiar. Ran the service history on each one, each one had blown the service by 300-2000 miles. Explains why they all had that nice discount.

Also, if something goes catastrophically wrong at, say 1600 miles, you just gave a shitty dealer an excuse to try to deny your warranty. You can fight it, and likely win, but there goes 6 months of your life.

How about this, avoid the headaches and do them at 1200.

Thinking of getting on the interim oil change train. Would someone be kind enough to point me to the torque specs for the oil filter cap and the oil drain bolt?

Also, where can I pick up a service manual? Or at least some document with all the recommended torque values

as others have mentioned. fluid changes should be based on individual use, climate, driving styles, and other conditions. we all associate mileage with when fluids need changed but we need to track and check fluids often to best determine when something needs changed. no magic formula to this. just my two cents.

What I am really after is what the drain plug material is . I think the pan is magnesium ...hoping the plug is not steel.

The S55 for the M3/4 originally came with magnesium pans which were later replaced with aluminum ones. The M2c came out after the switch was made and has always had an aluminum pan.
