Is 5W 40 okay for S55? I know it says it's BMW approved, but just checked my manual it's calling for 0W30.

The manual calls for 0W-30 with an API SL, API SM, API SN rating.

Reach out to your service center for other approved oils as the manual reads. Although BMW oils are FE rated, that is not the only reason for a 0W. Cold starts even in warm climate cause wear. Another reason why 0W is selected by the manufacturer. Consider the climate where you live when selecting the oil.

Even Porsche recommends 0W-40 for the 9k redline GT3 and RS.

The s55 motor has gone through many iterations in the bmw manual of recommend oil types. It has changed little by little throughout the years. You can use 0w30, 0w40, 5w30 or 5w40 all will be fine when LL01 approved.

I'm going to run euro platinum 5w-40 Pennzoil in my car.

If you go to the Pennzoil oil type recommendation selector for the s55 motor it lists 5w-40 as the oil for this engine.

Not sure where you are getting at. Ferrari recommends the use of 5w-40 and they have 9k redline too?

I see your point. Question is if we are using 0W40, or 5W40 at 5K, than we take to the dealer at 10K and they use 0W30, will it okay to going back and forth between two different weights? Called the dealer they are using 0W30.

BMW oil is Pennzoil with a BMW label. It won't hurt the engine to switch between the two oils. I use the free BMW oil in the winter.

No issue. I'm from Europe where it gets cold and some people run a winter/summer engine oil depending on the season.

Right now bmw will only put 0w-30 or 5w-30 into your M2c. I do not think they put 0w-40 anymore.

I'm gonna take a shot at doing my own oil, my friend said he will teach me my first time around, besides the oil, what other tools should I purchase for my first time changing oil? Also is https://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-5500...il+euro&sr=8-3 the recommended oil?

S55 oil change is super easy. You'll also need an oil wrench for BMWs to get the filter out it's housing.Something like this. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This filter wrench that I bought is a bit cheaper.

Oil filter
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DRHMRI..._aGJPCb4PWTQ5S
Oil-if you do "subscribe and save" it is only $38. a case, mega bargain!
https://www.amazon.com/Pennzoil-5500...il+euro&sr=8-3
I think the 5-40 oil that I listed is about the best quality/price you're going to find.
FYI, you do need 7 quarts. I just bought 2 cases so I have 5 spares until the next oil change then I'll have 4 spares etc. So far my car doesn't use oil.

I am not saying 5W is better or worse than 0W. I am saying Porsche feels 0W is best suitable for their 9k engine. That being said, I have confidence with 0W in my BMW.

I got that at the dealership. Inside the kit are extra items. 2 belong in the filter housing and are rubber seals that need to be replaced, the other one is the crush washer for the oil pan.

I think with s55 motor you need the crush washer and the nut. I'm pretty sure you can reuse the drain bolt. I believe BMW recommends to replace the drain bolt after every oil change.

I'm pretty sure it only came with the crush washer, but that's not to say the kit wasn't perhaps missing something, or even that I might have missed something. I re-used everything else.

My BMW oil filter kits have never included the drain bolt. I think that would be overkill.

I'm pretty sure the dealer is told by bmw to change the drain bolts. I need to double check my 1200 mile service and check if my dealer did that.

All ECS oil change kits come with the drain bolt. If bmw did not do this than ESS would not supply it with their kits.

I didn't know that. Anyway, if they do change the drain plug then we'll be getting new ones every 10k miles from the dealer. I'll have to remember to check after my next included service.

Have gotten away with using a channellock and rag to remove the oil filter without marring it.

P.S. If you have the oil filter wrench the proper torque for the oil filter cap is 25Nm / 18.43ft-lb

Good call out. The drain plug is 20Nm if in case anyone was curious as well.

I looked at the link and that drain bolt is not the same design. The one my car came with was just a simple 17mm bolt (I think it was 17). Doesn't require a hex key to remove. Wonder why that is different, I'm sure it'll work though assuming the threading is identical.
