Honestly, I think Porsche is beginning to do that with the 718 T. You can finally get Porsche' CF buckets without having to go to the GTS of GT4 variants.

To your point, this appears to be changing, albeit slowly, on the Porsche front. BMW appears to be hard headed on this front...
I currently have a '15 F82, after having the two previous generations of M3/4 coupes. The reason I'm on this forum is I have serious concerns about how bloated the G80/82 are going to be. I don't like bigger and heavier. Adding more hp to make up for more bulk is not sensible. or ultimately satisfying.

What would influence me on the next M2 is the availability of some of the upscale options the M3/4 have, like Nappa leather, ceramic brakes, etc. Manufacturers are missing out on serious revenue by not offering these choices without getting their larger models. Quality should not be equated to size.

. . . wheels look awesome!

Like the F87 and new G80/82, the G87 is going to require some MP coilovers/HAS to tighten up that fender-to-tire gap.

looks good for sure, but does lack a little of bulldog aggressiveness of the current car with its smaller footprint and stouter proportions

kinda of like how the m2 looks better than the f80 m4...the g87 looks more m4ish

That's the plan!

At this juncture, I really don't want care so much how it might look but my criteria is it must comes with a clutch pedal, red leather interior option and a MSRP under 60k, give or take.. I can't, in good conscience, cross a $1,000 a month payment for any means of transportation..

Other than that, I'm ecstatic to seeing it come to fruition, so soon in the process.. 😀

The fender flares on this thing is going to be epic

I'd love a 6MT, G80 carbon buckets and Sao Paulo yellow on this thing.

I feel like they won't allow carbon buckets so they can upsell to the g80/82 and the G87cs which will have them.

AK

I am not sure what wheels are shown in the latest pics, but they LOOK like the 1000M wheels in architecture. That said . . .

SEEMS unlikely the 1000M would be stock on the G87 when they represent an ///M Performance upgrade for the G80/82.

I do very much like the architecture of the wheels shown - whatever the wheel model - but with my G80 M3C I will be going with the 825M wheels . . .

I would also like a 4 cil with some kind of mild anti lag system.

340/360hp 4 cil and a new lightweight m2. I can promise you the lightness on the front with a 4cil will give massive response.

For people who want hp there is the m4 or m5, m8.

Let the new m2 be a new 1m coupe and add lightness.
Agreed on lightness be a good direction vs. more power. Lotus Evora comes to mind as something in the sub 300hp at ~3100lbs. If BMW were to make something like that it'd be epic. A B58 6-cyl would be plenty of power. A hopped up B48 could be good though, depending on how much weight it saves.

Worrying signs so far for the G87...

Increased weight
Increased size
No dct
Electronic handbrake

For those that want nothing more than a high powered barge with a fancy badge that's good for commuting & spotlight drags like the rest of the current M range I'm sure it will satisfy, for those that want a car for the love of driving it may be wise to hang onto your F87 a little longer.

enthusiasts don't want cars like these, its an end of an era, watch how demand(and price) of older BMWs goes up in the next few years

Watch how enthusiast BMW owners flock to Porsche too.

You are correct 1000%. I have major concerns about the G87 M2 with the increased size, length, weight, and no DCT.

It's December 2020 and the G87 M2 start of production is scheduled for December 2022.

Still a long shot.

If the G87 is still two years away - surely there's another iteration of the M2 after the M2CS?

F87 EUR-spec: M2C and M2 CS end of production: already happened.

F87 USA-spec: M2 CS end of production: this month. M2C end of production: June 2021.

M2 hiatus: from July 2021 till November 2020. G80 M3 and G82 M4 become BMW M 'entry models'.

G87 M2 start of production: December 2022.

Maybe in a distant future a G87 M2 CSL may see the light. But as weight keeps on increasing, it will be a challenge to deserve the "L" of the "CSL" badge, except if it's changed from "Leichtbau" ("Lightweight") to "Luxus" ("Luxury") or "Limitiert" ("Limited").

An M version of the current 1-series: now that would be something. The E82 1M showed that there is a lot of potential. BMW M should make another pocket rocket. Success guaranteed. Look at the success of the Toyota Yaris GR: small, powerful, big fenders and financially attainable for most petrol heads.
