Since BMW has apps for Spotify, Pandora, Amazon music etc, is the real appeal for google maps? What is the real incentive for carplay? Thanks.

Well, what I added was the full screen part of it. I had CarPlay from factory. Unfortunately, it defaults to 60/40 screen split and there is no way to change it without coding.

The appeal of Apple CarPlay in general is that it provides a similar interface compared to your iPhone. Plus, it handles text messages a lot better than bluetooth or bmw software.

If you have an iPhone and are a bit older, I think it's a beneficial add on to retrofit since it's one less interface to learn.

Was the install of the diffuser diy? If so - how did you find it as a diy job? Any advice as I've read it can be tough to get the stock one off.

I'd say it took about 7-10 minutes in total. I looked at the new diffuser to see where the tabs were located and gave it some muscle pulling off the stock diffuser in those locations and it popped right out. I initially used a trim tool to help pull it out far enough to grab with my fingers. I read a bunch of horror stories as well but I don't know...maybe those people haven't worked on cars before or something.

The diffuser is a replica but as far as I can tell it looks just like the m performance piece (minus the sticker on the bottom) and only costs $300.

Oh man it's so much better. For one it just looks better and is more modern.

It gets updated regularly by Apple. BMW is never going to refresh add update this old head unit. As cars age the tech really becomes the sore spot that's obviously outdated but that's not the case if you have CarPlay.

Siri is much better at voice commands if you need to search for a location rather than manually type it in on the iDrive wheel.

You can use your phone to send nav directions directly to CarPlay much simpler than BMW connect app.

Spotify and other apps UI much easier to use on CarPlay than BMW UI.

Waze maps fullscreen warns you about accidents and police speed traps.

My passenger side exhaust has always hung a bit lower than the driver's side and it's bothered me to no end. Finally found a tighter hangar that solved the issue. You can buy it here for anyone who has the same issue or simply wants to raise both sides up a tad.
