Has anyone tried 285/35 rear and 255/40 MPS4S on stock wheels?

Fellow M2ers,

I currently have a set of 265/35 front and 285/35 rear MPS4S tires on my stock M2 wheels. It has annoyed me to no end that the front tires have a shorter sidewall than the rears and that there is a lot more wheel gap in front. Therefore, I have been considering a change to the fronts.

Based on a tire calculator my current rears should have a sidewall hight of 3.9 inches and the fronts 3.7 inches. The height difference between the two looks a lot more than 0.2 inches to me.

If I put a 255/40 on the front, the height would be 4 inches. I'm thinking this might give me more sidewall in the front and fill that wheel gap a little better. The roads where I live are nearly third world country level horrific. I'm thinking the more sidewall in the front the better as long as it looks proportionate.

What do you guys think about switching to 255/40 in the front? Anyone else running that setup? Any pics?

As always, much appreciated guys.

your pic says you have 255/35 up front, and that would explain why the fronts have a much shorter sidewall than the rears (3.5" vs 3.9"). 265/35 would keep the proper width differential between front and rear (reducing understeer) as well as lessen the sidewall difference. Not sure I've seen anyone running 255/40, that's a lot of sidewall

It's all coming back to me now. A bit embarrassing really. 😤

It's been a while since I had the tires swapped. I checked my emailed receipt which was for 265/35 which ended up rubbing the fenders. They swapped me out for the 255/35s and refunded the difference. Didn't get an email receipt with the new sizes.

Thanks Matt.

So would 255/40 in the front work?

good question, guess it depends on where the 265/35's were rubbing. the 255/40's are narrower, but taller and have a larger diameter. hopefully someone else has actually tried and can chime in

The 265/35s were rubbing on the inner fenderwell at full lock. Based on the calculator the 255/40s are only 0.1 inches taller than the rear.

There are some half decent sales going on with the upcoming holiday. Figured it was a good time to make a change. I might just take the plunge and see how it goes. At least I will be able to share with the rest of the group. I’ve wasted more money on worse!

Thanks for your input Matt. Much appreciated.

If it's just rubbing the liner, just throw a heat gun on it and form it a bit. Shouldn't be too bad.

That’s not a bad idea.

I’m really tempted by the taller tire on the 255/40 though. The extra rubber would hopefully provide a ‘little’ more absorption of the crappy roads around here. It would also fill that fender well up a good bit.

Decisions decisions.

There's several M2s on here running 40 series tires. Though typically they go with 18s instead of 19s.

Give it a shot, let us know how it goes!

This may or may not be helpful for you but I ran 255/40/18 on the front with no problems!

Good to know. I’ll run up to discount tire in the next couple days and go ahead and get them ordered unless someone chimes in with a blocker.

It's interesting that you like the thicker sidewall, as the OEM sidewall is already on the thick side, and your rear is even thicker. Myself, I prefer thinner, so your 255/35 looks utterly fantastic IMO (although it could use a drop to fix the gap). Too bad there isn't a correct sized matching rear.

I'm a tire guy, and field tire questions about them daily, and I'm convinced that the ONLY people to get the wheel/tire thing absolutely correct on this car is Dinan. Unfortunately, with the correct size wheel/offset/gap/size tires, there are few tires to choose from, which is why they chose the Pirelli (and it leaves much to be desired compared to the popular PS4S).

I guess it’s all what you prefer, right? I love my rears with the thicker sidewall. It feels the wheel well and rides comfortable. The fronts to me look thin. I like the thicker stuff because (I believe) it gives a little more protection against bumps and curb scrapes.

I’d love to do a coil over suspension but can’t spend the money as the wife was laid off recently. I can swing tires but not suspension. I can live with the stock as I just use the M2 as a fun weekender. Never track it and don’t plan on it.

I might put a hold on this little 255/40 experiment for a bit as I had an unexpected expense pop up today. Maybe I’ll catch a Thanksgiving sale. Either way I think it’s worth doing and I’ll definitely report back with pics. Having the front only 0.1 inches thicker than the tear I’m hoping will be fine.

We’ll see. Thanks for your input!

Tried the 255/40/19s. Too tall. Rubbed the liner.
Switching to 265/35s.
