Tire selection for a cold, wet, possibly snowy track weekend?

Well, grr.

I had a day of track instruction with a local pro set for this Friday, followed by two days of HPDE on the weekend.

I've been looking forward to it for *months*.

And then, Colorado's weather had to rear its ugly head.

Thursday? Dry, with a high of 87, low of 54.

Friday? Wet and cold (2" of precipitation), high of 53, low of 32.

Saturday? Almost SIX inches of precipitation, high of 36, low of 32.

Sunday? Dry, with a high of 49, low of 31.

I'm cancelling Friday, but still considering the HPDE on Sat/Sun.

Tire options are either Michelin MP4S's or Cup-2 Connects.

Which would you recommend running? The Cup-2's aren't really much of a wet-weather tire, and neither are all that great below about 50 degrees.

I'm "sort of" thinking MP4S's for Sat, Cup-2's for Sun, or maybe MP4S's for both?

Any suggestions from the brain trust? Or should I just eat the cost of the HPDE and stay home?

TIA--

R.

PS4S are definitely the most versatile tire option. I've run them of super cold days, rainy days, and in the dead of summer in the North East, and the tire just performs. It wont knock your socks off in terms of grip, but it will always be pretty consistent. They last FOREVER too, which is always a good thing

Hope this helps!

Yup, that helps-- thanks.

I burned through the stock Super Sports in about 8000 miles.

I got the Cup-2's and a new wheel set for Christmas, and this was going to be my first chance to use them.

But, saner heads say to stick with the MP4S for the weekend-- assuming I can even find the track with 4" of water coming down.

Ugh. Colorado weather.

Rain and standing puddles, 4S all the way.
If theres little standing water and some dry lines, you could try sc2 but the 4s won't be holding you back that much imo.

Well, that problem sort of solved itself.

Friday: Cancelled by the track.
Saturday: Cancelled by RMBMWCCA (~6" of precipitation forecasted).
Sunday: Still on. 50 for a high, 24 for a low. Possible precipitation.

I guess I'm running MP4S's on Sunday!

I was going to say bring both. Drive out on the PS4S and pack 3 Cup 2s in the back seat and one in the trunk. Swapping them between sessions takes 30min.

FWIW I'd still run the Cup 2s in 50 degree temps. Should be able to get decent temp into them over a 20-30 min session. I run 200TW tires like RE71R or RT660 in much colder conditions and I'm always happier on those than PS4S. Even in a trackcross format where you have much less time to get heat in them

I've done the same thing with RT660's. I had a track day in March when the temperature was 17 degrees for my first session. It takes more time for the tires to heat up but there will be plenty of grip after a couple of laps.

I recently ran Goodyear F1 Supercar 3 in 30F weather. I got about 85% of the grip I get on warm days. 4S is a good choice for the cold.

Just to close the loop--

Took a chance and ran the Cup 2's on Sunday.

Conditions were.... brisk, dry and OHMYGOD windy. At least gusting to 40 kts-- my Big Agnes shelter Did Not Survive.

First session was low to mid 40's-- tires were a bit squirrely-- enough to break the rear end out under load.

Second, third and fourth sessions just got progressively better-- the last session was mid 50's.

Overall, I was very pleased with the Cup 2's-- but they do tramline a lot more than the MP4S's and are much, MUCH louder. The M lap timer was being wonky, but best I can tell, I took about seven seconds off my best time to date for the track. I'm going for fundamentals, not speed since it was a HPDE, but I was pleased with how the car went.

Glad I went with the Cup-2's. Thanks for everyone's advice.
