How much do you add to used value for cosmetic options?
Hey all. New to the forum. Looking to pick up a fun daily, and have been leaning towards an f80 for the extra doors as we are expecting our second. But then I saw there is an '18 m2 with 800 miles 1 hour north of me with an original sticker of almost $81k after he ticked every option and picked a bunch of parts from the m performance catalog. He bought the car in January, and his story is he needs to free up the money. Looks likes he's doing well from the house and other cars in the pics of the ad. Price is $58.5k obo. We have chatted some and he's willing to come down a bit. So my question is, how does everyone value almost $20k in carbon fiber bits, wheels, performance wheel, etc?

$0. Mods don't increase value. Now expensive wheels on the other hand might hold value but usually sellers would part that.

I've always believed that to a point, especially for what essentially is trim. So what kind of value would you put on it with less than a thousand miles, and the temp tag just barely expiring?

I didn't think you could get an m2 that high but I'd get this for cheaper instead https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1561235
I leave the value of mods to the buyer |

I have to agree with a previous poster, mods add almost nothing to the resale value. If the are M Performance parts they make the M2 sell faster.
Engine, exhaust, and tune mods actually decrease the resale value of the car. The M2 is worth in the $49K to $50K range. The M2C has dramatically reduced the value of 2018 M2. |

Agreed. I know i dont represent everybody, but I wont even consider a used vehicle that has had the engine or suspension modified. WHo knows what kind of additional wear and tear it has caused. MPE or other exterior accessories like spoilers and splitters wont scare me away, but I certainly wouldnt pay a premium for them. And I guess my other thought is that those that would like a modded car would simply prefer to buy an un-modded car so they can mod the car exactly the way they want.

For that price, the mods are more tban cosmetic, ie. Mperf suspension, m perf exhaust etc
And really things like the carbon spoiler lip etc these do help aero |

I don't think there's a set value, I think it's all subject to if the buyer finds value in the parts. For example, if a car has exactly the mods I want that would cost me $10k to buy myself, I'd certainly pay a premium for the car. If the car has mods that I don't care about, then I would probably research what the parts sell for used, and base my offer on that and part out what I don't want.

OEM reversalable cosmetic mods does add some value to a vehicle.
Any tuning mods, including Dinan, hellz no! I would expect a discount. Why would I purchase a vehicle which was beaten on, to an extent that's unknown or questionable.. That's why everyone would feel secure purchasing a vehicle from a grandma with two kittens VS a biker with a neck tattoo. |

It totally depends on the buyer. If they want your mods and are happy to avoid installing them, they may be willing to give you more. So on average, the value of your mods (assuming they are tasteful and don't ruin the car) will have net positive effect on the value of your car, but the value will be extremely subjective.

Personally, I would pay very little for what are just overpriced trim pieces. Maybe $1k over a car that didn't have any of them.
Think about 3-5 years down the line, do you think you will get additional value selling your car with some carbon trinkets? It will be even harder to demand a premium at all. Even factory options do not retain value in most cases. Your best bet, and maybe the owner's best bet is to sell them separately. |

I would look at it as
- Current value of stock car ~$50k (especially for an 800 mile example) - Value of mods to you - meaning, if you bought a stock used M2 for $50k with similar mileage, would you install most or all of the same mods? If so, then these mods have value for you. - If the above answer is no, then best to find a cheaper vehicle. - If yes, and he's willing to come to say $55k from $58.5k, then you're getting $20k of mods for $5k, on which even used you would have spent at least $10k. All subjective. That being said, I would be wary of such a modded out car being sold after 800 miles; have it checked out by a dealer for any warranty notes. I once bought an Individual M4 from CarMax and it was gorgeous. 5 miles out of dealership, bam - drivetrain malfunction. The poor thing had been money shifted and then sold to CarMax. Lucky for me they have a 3 day return policy... |

Additional options including cosmetic bits and pieces add nada, zero to the value of the car. The majority of cars are depreciating assets.
If it increases the enjoyment of your car and money is not a factor then do what you want to do. |

So unfortunately nothing is really added to the car's value. OP best to part-out if you want anything back.
