Put the rear seats down and go for a drive you want a louder interior. Makes a big difference.
I agree. With ASD deleted I have zero drone.

Really. Zero drone ????
Which mode are you talking about.
Comfort with flaps closed? Even in this mode I have some drone, with ASD off.

ASD off the drone is really minimal. Sport/sport+ with ASD on its not that bad, definitely liveable. Comfort with ASD on is bloody terrible!

With MPE or stock exhaust.
I have the MPE with ASD off and the drone is definitely there in Sport / Sport + with valve open.
Only time it is livable, is with valves closed in comfort.

TBH - retrofitting the stock resonator into MPE piping - at a different location than the stock exhaust system - will do very little to fix drone.

Resonance - that causes drone - occurs at specific frequencies. Resonator(s) is/are added at particular location(s) to counter these rogue resonance(s).

Always sport. Valve open or closed doesn't seem to matter. I usually drive with valve closed.

My MPE was port installed if that matters.

MPE fitted. Windows up and the sound insulation BMW use is pretty good. I let the windows down for a bit more noise. I guess it's subjective, I'm an old git 52 so maybe I'm a bit deaf

Certainly I don't notice much drone in sport/sport+ flaps open.

Comfort is terrible ASD on flaps open.

Interesting. Mine was dealer installed.
The only time I drive with valve closed is on early morning cold start up, as I live in gated estate and would wake the entire community. Lol.

Do you have OEM resonator installed.
As am also an old git at 57 and the drone is terrible.

Prior to this I had the 1M with the Meisterschaft exhaust with much less drone. Go figure.

You guys need to get rid of ASD. And I am older than both of you.

I have MPE with the stock resonator and it does still drone at around 3k RPM. I have the ASD bypass harness. ASD was very annoying but I dont mind the drone at all. Drone is louder with valves open but I still prefer driving with them open. I'm really happy a fellow forum member was kind enough to sell me the exhaust. It's made me love the car even more

Drone sucks for me in any mode, flaps open or closed, and yes I have ASD disabled. Highway cruising around 3K RPM's under load gives me a headache.

People with the M6 suffer more because with DCT you can cruise at highway speeds in 7th gear.
I'm gonna look into adding an aftermarket resonator and I'll probably try to wedge it in as far to the front as possible. If the car becomes too quiet I'll add catted downpipe.

For those of you that had drone with the mpe.. do things improve over time with more km's? Looking to potentially get the mpe but concerned with the drone!

I have 22k kms after 2.5 years and either I am just used to the drone, or I just don't notice it anymore.
Drone does diminish slightly in any case as the pipes become carbonated

Great - thanks for the inputs. The amount of drone and exhaust volume is a very subjective topic - I think I'll definitely have to spend more listening to the the mpe on member's rides before making the move to purchase. Good to hear it the drone does slightly diminish.

DP is whats missing. DP with stock catback is better sounding than catback with stock DP, and you definitely get more benefit in the cabin.

Thanks Specka. I see you're in Melbourne too. Would be great post lockdown restrictions to hear your car in person.
Definitely before jumping into either getting a DP or exhaust - will want to have a listen to as many options as I can. I find exhaust and anything car sound related is very very subjective.

I really like the MPE though. I test drove an OG with the MPE for about 25 mins and that was great but I was probably too distracted with assessing other aspects of the car than just focusing on the exhaust. But it could have exactly just been that - fun for a quick squirt around the block and not something so suitable for daily or longer drive use.

MPE sounds fantastic from the outside. Has a nice growling rumble at parking lot speeds - watching the tech take my car for a test drive around the dealer.

But... from the inside it sounds blah. I thought it was the ASD, so I coded it off. This is windows up of course.

1. You dont really hear any good sounds. Just a loud tone, almost "drony". Its like trying to listen to a movie in another room with the doors closed. Just muffled exhaust noise.

2. Around 2500 to 3200 RPM its kinda drony. Gives me a headache. I thought it was the ASD but its actually the MPE! In previous cars, getting on the gas from 2k to 4k RPM would always produce some fun sounds.... not the case here just kinda bland.

My test drive was a 18 w no MPE. There was nothing w MPE to drive.

I had the install checked by a BMW tech, he said it looked correct. Although he knew nothing about the M2 or MPE, so he was pretty useless.

On a positive note, the cold start was not as loud as I thought it was going to be.

Anyways... is there an adjustment? Bad install? Something I'm missing? Any tricks to getting the MPE to sound good INSIDE the cabin? Or atleast get ride of the drony noises, especially on the highway.

I'm sure i"m missing something. Hopefully it better than this... thanks guys
Couldn't agree more with your assessment. The drone really annoys me too
