1M for M2...
I'm toying with the idea of possibly selling my 1M and picking up an M2.
I need a second opinion on the pros and cons. What say you? |

Ran my M2 against a friends 1M at Road America a few weeks back. After several laps I had to let him pass. Just couldn't hold him off. I had him on the straights but he had me on the corners. He was running 275 square track tires. I was running stock MPSS. You make the call.
BTW I'm getting to cord on my fronts after 1 rotation left to right and 4 track days. Looking forward to my run against him next year with square RE71Rs.

1M is a nice car but if it was me, it's dated and time to move on. I don't care how great a car is, i want something new every few years |

Pics please.
I've never driven a 1M but after seeing two during my Euro Delivery, I would keep it. I still slightly prefer the looks of the M2, but it's so close. Not to mention I think the 1M will be worth A LOT of money one day. If you can't afford both right now, wait it out and pick up a used M2 in a few years, or whatever special edition they end up making. If you can afford both, buy the M2 as DD and garage queen the 1M. Oh, and those fender flares. |

Keep in mind that newer cars (1990's an on) don't like to just sit in the garage. You must drive the thing. Seals dry out, etc. Yes, a very low mileage 1M will be worth a bit more than an M2 because of the numbers of them in circulation but you're not talking classic Porsche numbers! It matters what the car is worth to YOU! If you enjoy it, just keep driving it, get an extended warrantee and new tires!

I may have to talk to the wife about possibly getting her the M2 DCT and having the best of both worlds. Cartoonish fender flares notwithstanding I simply love driving the 1M making this whole issue a tad difficult. |

The M2 is basically the 1M version 2.0.
If you're going to drive it, get the M2. By all accounts it has a more refined, less twitchy chassis. Technology has advanced considerably in 5 years. If you're just keeping it as a collector piece, keep the 1M. It's a lovable oddball car that will always have a market due to the character and low production numbers. |

Get both
1M is already a collector classic, the value can only go up from this point, unless the financial situation is completely inflexible, it would be wise to keep this future all time BMW classic in your stable. As of m2, man what a car, but even with all the awesomeness from m2, I would never trade the 1m for m2 for lots of reasons. my preference in this order 1. Figure out a way to keep 1m and get a m2. 2. Keep 1M and buy the m2 when space and financial isn't a issue in the future(it's a 5 year run limited production car, but not limited run,you will have plenty of time to make your decision later) 3. Trade 1m for a M2 (Love my m2 , but it would just be absurd to trade 1m straight up for m2) |

This is a good problem to have. Both cars are great, I tend to lean towards newer technology so my bias would be towards the M2 but the 1M is a great car and has potential to appreciate. I say potential because we have already seen these prices move both up and down so I don't know that it is a guarantee that they will appreciate substantially over the fairly near term. Because of that potential many are not driving the 1Ms which in my opinion defeats the purpose of owning one.

I have driven both...for me personally; the M2 drives better, brakes better, the exterior and interior looks better...but the 1M is more intoxicating and delivers more thrills when driving.... Value is something personal and only the future will tell what the value of the 1M will become... Value will rise, but don't expect Porsche increases.

I did not get it as an investment, I love driving and the initial test drive hooked me. Getting both would only work if the wife agreed to make it her daily driver, will need a convincing plan... |

I made the switch...no regrets. 1M was great, but I'm like the other folks ready for a change and new tech. I loved the look of the VO 1M, but the LBB M2 is just as stunning...esp in the sun. And the power and handling are excellent...though certainly more refined at times. I feel like I've been lucky to step up each time- 325 to 135 to 1M to M2. PCD for the M2 was the icing on the cake.

VOCAN, you already asked so you want the M2, so do it. Let somone else that truly appreciates it have a shot it it. Two people will end up happy.
I respectfully disagree with the simplified statements that the M2 is 1M v2. Yes but not really. My 1M has an amazing classic cockpit with no nav, no I-drive, large clear beautiful displays. No comfort button, no fake engine noise, no big display blocking the road or killing my night vision. it has a great oil temp gauge and manual seats. It is different and I cannot get an M2 like that. As much as I like the M2, which is a ton, I cannot make the switch due to the sum of all the nonsense and dilution of the 1M formula. It is a better car for sure but with the great chassis and track prowess, it comes saddled with the gadgetry, idrive and fakery that I don't like. The 1M is a truly special car and in BMWs history. It is the last M car and last BMW that was only offered in a manual transmission. The last M car you could get without a comfort button and fakery. There is a reason that still, to this day, editors and even Chris Harris prefer the 1M over the M2 and it's because it is something special. Being special is also a curse for some, namely me. Because I know that I could never buy another M car without iDrive, screens, fakery, etc. I worry a lot about my 1M and this is probably the top reason to sell the 1M and get an M2. It is not special and that is a good thing. It will do everything you want better or mostly as well without the burden of a special car that cannot be replaced. If BMW would've offered a no nav, no idrive, no fakery, manual seat version with an oil gauge I probably would've gotten M2 so I can drive it with abandon. So if you are like me and stress about the 1M, then sell it and get an M2. Best wishes! |

1M is more playable on lower speeds and when you step into the car, start it up and drive away you already feel it's something special. Even at low/dd speeds. With M2 not so much. It looks 'better' (but that's subjective, the bulldog stance of the 1M is even more macho) and everything is more modern. But as you're driving along with the traffic M2 almost feels like a 335i with a supersporty chassis setup.
But when you're pushing it(on a trackday) it will come alive and brakes(standard) are way better, the stability in short/longer bends is way better, there is (sadly?) more traction from the PSS vs PS2 on the 1M. The whole balance when pushing it is better. Also when into sharper U turn-ish bends the M2 will point in where even(!)the 1M won't : Because of that electronically operated M diff sending 'all' the power to the outside wheel in a different way than 1M did. No understeer. Incredible almost unreal... 1M is more wobbly less traction, more work on a track tbh. Soundwise:M2 by far. Steering:1M but when pushed and sport/sport + the M2's eps is very very very good. Rest: It's up to you. 1M is one of the greatest M cars ever built. Bold statement by ME(and imho): If I don't do track/driftdays 4-5-6 times a year I don't see the (my) purpose of having an M2 at all....
For the 1M it's a bit different, but not that much, living without some track/driftdays for 1M also makes those cars obsolete in MY book. Hate to say it. You cannot fool around on highways/B roads /traffic that much anymore. So what's the purpose of having such agile powerful cars anyway... (Rhetorical question) Cheers Robin(driver not a purist) |
