This noise would of drove me crazy; I totally understand you guys' annoyance..
In my old Acura, when it got cold, the dashboard use to shrink and rackle over every other bump I'd encountered. I generously wedged insulation weatherstripping sponge (listed below) between the windshield and dash and was able to permanently eliminated every bit of noise.. A little elbow grease and I'll be back to serenity now.. Similar issue: https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1245687 |

Thanks Poochie, if only my issue was that simple. The cracking noise most people are talking about on this thread is from the sheet metal and potentially poor quality spot welds, so will happen even with the A-pillar trim completely removed.

Got you. Maybe if you're at a lost, try a reputable bodyshop.. A decent bodyman should be able reverse-engineer the frame build and properly weld it back to the proper specs.. Good luck and keep us updated.. |

I made a wedge from plastic and gently wedged that between the metal sheets but it didn't make any difference I'm afraid. Also tried putting lubricant spray down there with no positive result.
I'm now thinking laterally and considering putting bigger speakers in the front to drown out the noise. |

Tried Teflon spray, graphite powder, plastic wedges, felt tape, etc. I even tried packing the area closest to the windshield with sound deadener and lining the a-pillar cover with the same stuff.
Reluctantly, I’m taking it back to the dealer on Tuesday. |

I know it's a longshot did you try the driver side of the windshield same thing remove the cover and pry the metal part ? Also check the bolts on the aluminum brace where they connect to the base of the windshield under the hood. I think I read the bracing was a problem on the 1M ? Good luck . Carl

Bought it used w/ 8k so I think my lemon law options are limited here in NY. I reached out to BMW of America to get some assistance but haven’t heard back. I’m just struggling with what is causing the popping noise and if it can actually be repaired by my local dealership. Part of me just wants to walk away from the car because we of my lack of confidence it can be repaired.

Spent all day today with the trim off trying to fix the cracking noise, no luck. The three fins of metal now look like mince meat. 3 months now and no matter what I do the crack keeps cracking. Would love to cut my losses and sell the car but my wife won't let me. Wish I could go back in time and never sold my 135i and bought this piece of rubbish. The 2 series in my opinion really shows how much BMW manufacturing has slipped from the earlier 1 series coupe.
Advice to anyone thinking of buying a 2 series coupe; take it for a test drive over a slightly rough road and make a few left and right turns and if you hear a cracking noise from an A pillar - WALK AWAY!!!!!!!! |

Does anyone have access to the BMW Repair Procedures, specifically B51 07 17-Attachment A. I found a newer TSB for the popping noise and it references this attachment at the bottom of the bulletin (see PDF).

That looks promising. Would love to get a look at that PDF if someone has it.
After reading a similar problem in a 1-series chat room and getting some ideas, last night I took the trim off the A-Pillar yet again and practically emptied a can of Lanolex (automotive lubricant) in every hole and metal seam joint I could find, including spraying with an extended nozzle up under the roof lining where the A-Pillar meets the roof. For anyone else trying this make sure your lubricant is safe to use with plastics and rubber i.e. not silicon spray. The spray I used is lanolin based that made the car smell a bit like a sheep but hey, anything to get rid of that bloody noise. It has made a significant difference with the cracking and popping all but going away. I can only presume that with my very liberal amount of spraying it hit the spot somewhere. I still don't know where exactly. I plan on spraying again tonight, particularly in that top section to try and get rid of the cracking noise completely. At least now I feel like I am getting somewhere and might even try and remove the roof lining and separate some of the joints in there if i'm feeling particularly confident. I'd always prefer to try it myself rather than giving it to a BMW service centre and going through the tediousness of convincing them that there is a problem. |

Put some more lubricant in the A-Pillar and took some photos for those who might have the same issue of the cracking and popping noise when going over rough roads. For me it is particularly an issue when turning right. The lubricant certainly seems to help and fingers crossed I've almost nailed it.
Photos attached show where I have sprayed the lubricant. It seems to have been most effective when applied to the top of the pillar at the seem overlays near the airbag. Also through the holes all the way down the pillar that are obvious once the trim has been removed. |

My cars going back in for the third time for the popping noise. Apparently there are a total of three TSBs for A-Pillar noise from what I am being told. I had the spreading of the overlapping sheet metal done already. The one they are trying next involves removing the headliner and who knows what else. I’ll find out more tomorrow.

My car started making the A pillar click after re-delivery from ED. For the first 500 miles after re-delivery it clicked a lot. Now after 1600 miles since it started, it clicks just occasionally. My M235i made the same click but it healed after a summer in the hot sun. I'm hoping this one heals too. I don't fancy them tearing my car apart.

I’m happy to report my car is finally fixed. The dealer had to take the headliner down and spread apart the overlapping sheet metal 0.2mm and spray with lubricant.

Honestly, I’m just glad the whole ordeal is over and if it comes back, I know how to fix it. Dealership had my car for over 50 days and it was painful to say the least.
