What an epic place for a track. I spent some time on that island in 2006, beautiful part of the world. Except for the flys :-)

What do you think contributes to the faster lap time the most?
The wheels? Extra 100-200lbs of weight saving? Adjustable suspension? It seems like the power isn't a massive increase if you're pulling the same speeds on the straight but 2.5 seconds is a lot of time to save. I'd love to hear your perspective on it having had both cars.

The 2.5 sec difference doesn't tell the whole story. The actual difference is far greater than that. For reference, my M2C dct was completely stock, PSS tyres, big M brakes with stock pads and fluid. 2 track days in this car at this track. The CS dct was my first time back at this track in 12 months, completely stock, RE71RS tyres, stock pads and fluid (same pads as the M2C I believe). M2C Best time day 1 - 1.50.5, day 2 - 1.53.0. Optimal time - 1.49.9. Avg speed - 144kmph. Turn 1 sweeper - 163kmph Turn 12 onto main straight - 139kmph Top speed - 238kmph M2CS Best time - 1.48.0. Optimal time - 1.43.4 Avg speed - 162kmph. Turn 1 sweeper - 179kmph Turn 12 onto main straight - 116kmph Top speed - 238kmph My conclusions were that I pretty much maxxed the M2C potential in my hands and skill level. The PSS were great for a few laps, then dropped off massively. They're a road tyre, not a track tyre. The CS was quicker everywhere. My best lap time should have been much faster, but traffic and consistency let me down. Brakes felt the same, stopped well enough but pedal feel on stock pads at temp wasn't confidence inspiring like track pads are. The big difference in speed through Turn 12 compared with the M2C must have been my shitty exit on that best lap as other laps dipped to only 150kmph here. The RE71 tyres obviously will give more grip through the corners, but more importantly they were consistent throughout the day. Best times in the first session and last session of the day were similar. But this also showed that I wasn't really improving. The equal top speeds again might be a bit misleading. I was hitting that top speed regularly in the CS, the M2C was in the low 230s most of the time. That one-off 238 must have been a freak corner exit and maybe a tailwind. Overall, the tyres definitely help but the CS is a beast. I can't pinpoint a particular trait of the CS over the C that helped with the faster lap time, more the sum of its parts. Itching to get back there again next month. Last edited by Piets94; 12-03-2021 at 03:03 AM.. |

In traffic on track, if you are going really fast you will get chunks of rubber streaks all over the car, so it isn’t practical to try to extra-wrap only certain areas of the car.
I’ve been using Mothers R3 race rubber remover for many years. Whether directly on paint, or on top of ceramic coat, or on top of 3M clear wrap, it performs the same and never damages anything. Spray on, wait 20-30 seconds, and wipe off. Then a moist paper towel over the areas to remove the excess R3 traces. This is best done right at the track at the end of the day. And yes, RE71R/S will give you that 1-2 second advantage over PSS, easily. The rest is probably down to the various CS improvements (suspension damping, alignment, lighter weight, power tuning etc).

Having tracked an M4C (which is what the M2 CS is in terms of tune and suspension) and an M2 Competition on the same track, in the same conditions and on the same day, the main difference would indeed be the better tyres noting that your CS would weight the same as the M2C without the carbon brakes option. Subjectively, the other differences are just in the tuning (stronger top end) and more stability over the kerbs (courtesy of the heavy adaptive dampers). Happy driving regardless! p.s. Sorry, for a moment I thought we were still in 2021! Last edited by Emme2; 04-09-2022 at 08:45 AM.. |

Whilst entirely true that to compare cars on the same day would be ideal, this is impractical for me unfortunately. The only time I've got to do this was on a BMW Training Day in the G80/G82 and the M2C, and I absolutely preferred the driving dynamics of the M2C on the day. Same driver, same tracks, nice weather is the best I can give you. The M4C, M2C, CS all have the same hardware (different oil pan on the CS), but the various chassis calibrations are different across the models. The CS tuning effort shines on track (and I believe the same applies to the F80/F82 CS models), and gives far more confidence to push through the corners with greater speed. My old M2C had big brakes, sunroof, and a few other options, so it definitely weighed more than my CS. For reference, my lap times on the same old tyres as before have now improved further: Phillip Island: M2 CS - 1.47.0. M2C - 1.50.5 Winton: M2 CS DCT (RE71RS) - 1.32.6. M2C DCT (PSS) - 1.38.0 M2 CS MT (PSS) - 1.34.6 (different driver and day) M2Comp (upgraded turbos, Akra, ESS tuning, Eventuri intake, charge cooler, KWV3, camber plates, Pole Positions, DS2500, Trofeo R, racing wings, roll cage, etc, etc) - a seriously cool piece of kit - 1.30.5 (different driver and day). I won't understate the effect of tyres on overall lap time, but I certainly won't short sell the CS as just a Comp with a better top end and heavy adaptive dampers either. You should drive one in anger (if you haven't already) to see what I mean! |

Mother’s R3 Racing Rubber Remover is what you want to use. It’s magical, and works far far better than WD40 or Goo Gone.
