Downpipe with stock exhaust?

My M2 is completely stock right now and I am considering a downpipe. I do not have the M Performance exhaust. Since it is my daily, what I am looking for is no drone whatsoever. What are your suggestions?

And this is a general question: If the downpipe triggers a CEL, aside from the yellow light on the dash, does it affect the engine in any way? Like richer air-fuel ratio?

It's always best to do a down-pipe before an exhaust because it changes the sound so much for the better that many guys skip the exhaust completely.

If you get any down-pipe other than the FabSpeed then you will get a CEL, and it will in no way hurt anything, or cause any issues, it's just that the dealer isn't going to like it.

And even if you get a FabSpeed down-pipe there is no guarantee you won't get a CEL. They will lie to you and tell you that it won't happen if you have a correct install, and they are 100% no-CEL, but it's not true.

And remember, even without a tune you will still get some hp/tq from a down-pipe, even if it's catted.

And lastly, don't pay big bucks to some specialist to put the down-pipe on, it's literally a joke, so go the cheapest route there. I'll bet your local Jiffy Lube could do it.

Ok, thanks for clarifying the CEL, I am not planning to get an exhaust aside from the downpipe. Will there be any drone with just a downpipe? That is my main concern

Even with the stock exhaust and downpipe there is some drone. It's not terrible, but there is some for sure.

With a downpipe the whole exhaust becomes louder, including the drone. If you're OK with the drone now, you'll be OK with it after, but do keep in mind that everything will be louder.

Yes, unfortunately, the existing drone will be increased by the percentage of overall exhaust volume increase, no more, no less. DP's usually don't create or negate drone, that's the job of the resonator.

An exhaust with no drone is possible, but it's a bit like cutting off your nose to spite you face because it'll be louder than the drone was at all times.

I have stock exhaust and Fabspeed sportcat, imo the major contributor to 'drone' was ASD, code it out and the sound is all good Have driven 30K km with the downpipe installed & no CEL.

Thanks guys. Although I dont think the drone will bother me, I will still listen to one in person before pulling the trigger. You guys' information was pretty helpful though

This is something I forgot to mention. Most of the drone comes from that damn ASD!

Car will run as normal even with the CEL.

If you are using a Jb4 or stock, get the Fabspeed downpipe for no CEL.

If you are using bootmod3 or Active Autowerke flash tune, you can use any downpipe and you wont get a CEL

ASD was already coded out. Even with my stock exhaust, the artificial drone in sport mode is quite annoying. Idk why BMW put it there in the first place

I run a VRSF catless dp with the OEM exhaust and there is no drone whatsoever. Its a must have mod Imo, I do run a tune but I have a bunch of other mods. They make the O2 spacers and even offer them with the VRSF pipe to help avoid CEL. I also disabled my active noise in the cabin which makes the engine sound too loud

If you’re hearing a variance in Sport/sport+ compared to Comfort ( same rpm, assume stock tune) then ASD is active.

Does it sound similar to this? https://youtu.be/tXYHHFmvbgk?t=82 And how many times louder do you think it is? How about the smell? Thanks.

That's the exact same set up I have. It's plenty loud, can't imagine wanting more.
I used the ASD bypass cabling as opposed to coding but the results are the same.

How's the drone and smell? Any noticeable power gains?

No smell as it's catted and no drone. Haven't dynoed it but it seems to breath a little better.

I have also heard rumours about losing low end torque, is that true or not?
