Looking to just add a bit more "aggression" in both sound and hp

Hi guys,

I'm looking to add something to my 2017 M2 to produce a more "aggressive" sound. Would a Dinan resonator delete be enough to add character to the car while maybe adding a couple hp? Or would I be better off going all out and doing a Fabspeed Sport cat + resonator delete? or MPE+ Resonator delete?

The resonator delete isn't going to give you any HP. Your best bet for a bit more sound and more hp without any issues is the Fabspeed catted down-pipe. You can regularly find them on the boards used for about $700.

I put mine on last weekend. My exhaust is stock otherwise and the new cat gives just the right amount of volume to the stock set up. I wouldn't want it any louder. Of course I'm not 20 either.

Thank you for that! I was going to ask if a downpipe would also be another route to go. The catted one shouldn't throw any CEL's right? Even though I do have a tune.

I haven't tuned (yet) and have no CEL with the Fabspeed cat.

Yeah I understand. After having quite a loud set up on my E92, I'm looking to be more civil nowadays. Do you think a dinan resonator delete + Fabspeed Sport cat is too much?

Some people post that there's no drone with the resonator delete but I don't see how that's possible. By design it's job is to stop resonance (it's a resonator). Deleting it also gives you zero performance gains. I could never understand why some people go that rout but understand that I may be in the minority.

You make a good point. I may just start with the sport downpipe and see if thats enough sound/gain and then consider an exhaust

Good plan. I would purchase the lower clamp as well. Some people reuse it but it has an integral gasket. I didn't want to take a chance on a leak so I replaced mine. It's also much easier to install the cat with a new clamp as opposed to reusing the old one, at least for me it was.

Are you saying any aftermarket downpipe clamp or specifically an option from Fabspeed?

Factory lower clamp/gasket assembly. I don't think Fabspeed offers it. The upper one is a fiber type o-ring that fits in a groove. It should be fine. I bought one just in case but after seeing it and how it's made, I reused the old upper gasket.

Fabspeed downpipe is the best option to get you power and sound.

The only downpipe that doesn't throw a CEL is the Fabspeed catted. A lot of guys are going to get some sort of tune, so they aren't concerned with the CEL, they just flash it out. But if you're not going that route, Fabspeed is the only option.

And if you are going the flash tune route, a lot of guys will get a cat-less DP instead of catted because even though the flow of the catted is over 90% that of a cat-less, the volume is only about 50%. I would say that the catted sounds better IMO, it's warmer for sure. The catted DP has a much brighter sound overall.

So it really just depends on if you're getting a flash tune, and if you care about a bit of exhaust smell at stoplights when you have the windows down.

I also agree with cecaa850 with regards to the resonator delete. Resonators don't improve the sound outside the car, they are designed to limit sound INSIDE the car. Bad idea IMO.

I went the fabspeed sport cat route as its the cheapest option vs full exhaust. And I am more than happy with it. I purchased it used with 4000 miles on it. The only annoyance is cold start can be pretty loud. I have friends who have the m performance exhaust and they enjoy it.

Sound by drive mode for sportcat:
Comfort - barely noticeable over stock, windows up is pretty quiet
Traction, Sport, Sport + - burbles louder, occasional backfire, great inline six sound from 2.5rpm to redline, occasional turbo whistle

Mad respect for the 997.1 turbo and the e92 m3.

Thanks for the insight. I think this is the best route and if the mod bug gets stronger, I'll consider an exhaust. Leaving both cars pained me but the worst really was the e92. Never felt the same connection with the 997 even though it was superior in every way

I skipped the e92 m3, hopping to pick one up in the future!
