One would think so. However, BMWUSA has never provided these types of software-feature upgrades (besides the bluetooth fixes) or retrofits. BMW still prevents software-feature upgrades depending on build date, regardless of whether or not the car's hardware supports it. For example, my NBT car was prevented from getting "Siri/Google" long press bluetooth feature merely due to a certain build date. These artificial limitations are one of the reasons coding is so popular.

That does make sense though, as BMW is facing increasing competition from manufacturers providing over-the-air feature upgrades. |

Folks, almost ALL BMW models get iDrive 5.0 at start of production MY17 (or July '16 build date onward). It is available for 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 Series, as well as to the X5 and X6 SUV. The BMW X1 F48, and the 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer have to wait longer.

Apple CarPlay now available
I just picked up my car yesterday and in the Connected drive store was the option to have Carplay.
I paid up and by magic everything worked. I waited until this morning to check so perhaps it needs to download. It could be installed already and just needs to be activated, but either way it works. Here's a link https://9to5mac.com/2016/08/31/bmw-carplay-models-usa/ To be honest I thought it would be better but I guess over time it'll improve. |

I'm pretty sure it's a pay option but check on the Connected drive store. Surely it would work on all the latest systems. It's so new it's not even listed on the apple carplay site as supported yet

I believe you need the new iDrive. I have a MY16 and CarPlay is not available on the ConnectedDrive store and I've checked the Canadian one, US one and even the Swiss one just in case.
