what's the process?
A solution is being presented for a BIG problem for pre lci cars (for seemingly a fraction of the cost of a cluster retrofit)...lots of us would appreciate more details.

Your first post is titled you have a solution to a problem everyone else has and then you just say it's fixed and then give no info.

The info you want is in my second post in the thread. So I really don't see the problem. Really sorry for trying to help...

LOL,this thread is hilarious. Why not just post a pic of what you did. This gauge issue isn’t even that big of a deal. There are very few times in certain lighting situations when the gauges get hard to read. They look much better than the LCI gauges and i’m glad that my car has them.Happy Holidays Everyone.

As far as I recalled, there is not way to code the backlight to stay on, independent of the headlights.. I searched extensively and I asked some veteran coders here and they confirmed this.

You can decode the light sensor, so your cluster would fooled into believing it's always nighttime and remain on but that would mean you're headlights will always be on, also.

Now, if this dude is making physical alterations to the cluster and rewiring it's plumbing, that might work, separately from the headlight.. But who's is really going to deal with the downtime or risk of no cluster.

Pre lci cluster is a joke. Hard to see, no oil temp gauge...on a bmw...seriously? I have owned some shit cars in the past and not one did I everhave difficulty seeing the gauges. Unacceptable.

Any info on that facebook link? I don't do FB and can't see it. It sounds like they're removing the cluster and soldering in a jumper between the backlighting and something that stays powered on for a minute or 2 after you turn off the car...the "invisible" multi function graphic display in the lower right, maybe?

I'd love to know the fix. I'm pretty good with a soldering iron and might be willing to give it a shot.

It's not often that the display is washed out but when it is, it sure is annoying.

I never look at the analog speedometer, just use the digital display. Personally I don't understand why any manufacture still uses an dial type display at all. Nothing is clearer than a digital display of the speed. Wish BMW had a larger display for digital information.

I believe this thread list a possible solution to the hard-to-see Pre-LCI instrument cluster..

The fix is to add LED bulbs to mimic a backlit.. :

This is so NOT a real issue, and I’m VERY thankful my car has the pre lci set up. I hate the fake screen ones. If you can’t see well enough to see them, please dont drive on public roads.

Ya ok buddy. If it wasn't such an issue, why did bmw feel the need to add proper lighting for day time driving in the lci m2? Not to mention the countless members on here that have complained about this issue. :
