I could not agree with you more Bimmercs As I've mentioned in other threads, I'm not a petrol-head although I truly appreciate marvels of automotive engineering. M2CS is the closest modern BMW offering a semblance of my childhood dream car. That raw exhilaration that the 2002ti delivered all those years ago without all the theological advantages today's cars bring with them; just pure imperfect engineering that led to such perfect fun cars to drive and enjoy. I suspect M2CS must feel as close we're ever going to get to the "purity of the motoring experience" that once upon a time BMW embodied into its works of motoring art like the 2002ti or the 3.0 CSL. Yes, today's electric handbrake will do the same job as the mechanical ones of yesteryear, but can you pull up the handbrake and do a 180° turn at high speed with an electric handbrake? NO That doesn't mean one would seek to do that anyhow. It's just good to know you still have a roaring wild beast that yields to your unrealistic demands loyally and expeditiously, rather than robotically and emotionlessly. I think the CS is just the animal to do that. It appears to me, with most modern day sports cars, technology drives the car more than the driver does. It's a pleasure, therefore, when you see a motoring genius as is the M2 CS which let's "you" drive rather than just take you there, "safely" but boringly. I can't wait till mine arrives so I can sit in the driver's seat with my eyes closed imagining my seven year old self driving the 2002ti he always loved and yearned for. For that reason, I wish BMW had only manufactured 2002 M2 CSs, what a tribute would that have been indeed.

Thanks for posting, enjoyed the videos.
While I think it comes as no surprise to anyone that has owned an M2 or M2C, it's still nice to see the M2CS receive the accolades. Congrats to BMW M indeed. Agree with above sentiment that the YOU drive the M2, rather than the car drives you. The car begs you to drive it. And It's brilliant in its overall simplicity...especially with the 6MT. Who needs all the tech and luxury when you've got something that's this engaging and fun? Anyway, while I'd love to have one, the CS is beyond my needs and skill...actually my OG M2 is beyond my needs and skill, so I guess that's a terrible reason. But to those that get their hands on a CS, congrats and I look forward to you sharing your excitement and thoughts on your car!

MadBimmeRad - perhaps COVID and the year end will conspire to keep BMW production short of target and smack-dab on 2002 out the door .. we can hope And about that Freudian slip regarding the *theological* advantages of modern cars, all I can say is perhaps BMW's marketing department and the M Team need to have a Coming-to-Jesus session to figure out the future of the brand! |

It tickles me that the conversation has turned to the 2002... I picked up a '74 2002 in Sept 2020, and I am in love with the raw feeling of driving a car with absolutely no computers interfering with the experience. It is such a joy to drive, and nice contrast to my modern vehicles. The M2CS purchase was not planned, but after hearing about how great of an M car it was, I had to have it. It is still in transit, but in my mind, it will always be a car I purchased in this unforgettable year. A 2002 and an M2 in 2020. What a strange year for me.

At last someone who feels what I'm talking about. Yes indeed, my next purchase will certainly be a 2002. May I congratulate you on your exquisite taste in your choices of motoring purchase in 2020

I just finished reading this issue of Evo and although I liked the YouTube videos the eCoty articles are on a different level. It was exciting to follow these guys every day of that week and see how they were feeling about each car. I was surprised about the result but I can see how it came to be and I welcome their decision.
Overall this year a few cars that saw improvements over the past few years did well, i.e. Civic Type R, Huracan Evo RWD and the M2 CS. Quote:

I thought the review was good. Clearly EVO is still grounded around the thrill of driving. My M2C is surprisingly fun. More fun on track. CS i think is perfect with weight reduction in all the right places. I personally think it beat the Lamborghini and McLaren because neither had 3 pedals.

A base 230i is a compact rwd coupe with enough power to have fun in and its available with a manual transmission.
Big picture, that’s a cooler car than 95 percent of the stuff out there. We are all very very lucky people to have these cars in the grand scheme of things. Last edited by Moflow; 01-04-2021 at 10:23 PM.. |

This just arrived in the mail from eBay. A great read and one I'm going to enjoy keeping coming back to. Looking at the competition the F87 CS had to beat to win is a little mind numbing. Not sure if it will ever be repeated.
It's one thing to be the best BMW but to be the best among the legends of automotive manufacturing is something else (unless you're Porsche apparently). |

I'm surprised they didn't put the winner in the cover, or is that their usual tease?

Reading all of the EVO Reviews of the CS (their original review, the feature in October where they look at the CS and do a comparo review to the GT4, and then the eCoty take), its clear they found this to be a very special car. It did lose the comparo to the GT4, but it seemed to be more that car guys in general don't like to have anything beat the GT4 because that stands for everything people love about cars. I personally view EVO as the car bible, as i've read that magazine for over 20 years faithfully. The CS winning eCoty is a big deal in my opinion, and made me pull the trigger to buy one.
The ethos of EVO had always been "thrill of driving" not "thrill of tracking", and that has shown up in eCoty for years. This year's eCoty is a perfect example of that, they use the track to whittle down the final list but go to B roads to crown the winner. This is why the GT4 and M2 CS have beaten out supercars, because those supercars are less exploitable and possibly less enjoyable on the road. There are few cars I'd honestly want to own over my M2 CS (maybe a 911R, but probably not any of the supercars it beat). Its a beautiful, understated and amazing road car. The level of chassis tuning and steering work is what you are paying the 25k premium over the Competition in my opinion, not the carbon bits and extra power. I'll probably upset M2C owners, but i owned an original M2, drove an M2C, and i would not pay 60k for an M2C. I would not hesitate to pay 85k for the CS again after spending the past couple weeks driving it. Its that much better than the M2C. But i don't believe this is an "M is Back" situation, but rather a one-off great car which we probably won't see from BMW ever again. Enjoy it, and anyone who didn't buy one, go buy one while they are still available if you want it. Last edited by ScullyD; 01-04-2021 at 03:25 PM.. |

It being the non CS it's not terrible with the company it was keeping. Will be interesting to see how the CS does in a couple years. Hopefully the trend continues of them being strong limited availability hits with impressive driving dynamics. As the years go on I think that trend will treat that sub model variant well in the various product lines.
