Comfort access

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
For the longest time I didn’t realize the CS lacked comfort access. Mine has it, and it even has the little ridges on the door handles. More than likely retrofitted by the previous owner, but did any of the later production models have it as an option? I have a late model, but after decoding the vin, I didn’t see any mention of it.

Just find it interesting. It’s a great feature don’t get me wrong, but not something I would spend that much time and money adding lol.

Never heard of any CS with comfort access. I never missed it in the end. Made getting into the car a more intentional act (that’s how I justified it to myself

I hate reaching into my pocket to unlock the CS...

Can you post some pics? Interested to see it.
I explicitly asked about comfort access when considering a build order CS, but it came back as unable to install. Something about the bits taken out in a CS meant that it was physically not possible. So if you have it, it’s definitely a retrofit and I am very intrigued as to just how much work would have gone into it. Would have needed Comp CPU and loom amongst other things…
I really thought I would miss comfort access but didn’t. As per others, it kind of makes it more of a special event to take the CS!
Cheers

I took a photo of the door handle on both the passenger and driver side (and one of the back to show it’s a CS lol). Still finding it hard to believe someone went to the trouble. I watched a few videos and the process seems very expensive and cumbersome!

It sounds stupid, but coming from the Comp with comfort Access, it really did take me a bit to get used to not being able to tap the door handle to unlock. Especially with a toddler in 1 arm and his bag in the other.

The first week or two with my CS, there were certainly a few, "dammit, why?" moments.

I'm joking of course, but did you cross reference the VIN before purchase, to ensure it wasn't just the CS badge that was retrofitted? (I kid, I kid)

That really does seem like an extensive job to undertake.

Yep. There are certain things that if you didn't have, you'd think nonethewiser, but as soon as you have it, there's almost no going back...CA is definitely one of those.

Lol! Oh yes, I certainly did. But I would be lying if I said I didn’t double check after the fact 😎

I definitely still miss Comfort Access coming from a car with it and not being used to using the key fob.

It looks like other modifications were also made including to the tail lights?

That was one of the mods I did. I got the gts style lights and had a custom order to have the blue start up sequence coded red…so basically, much better 👍 other than that, just spacers, and the m-performance winglets. But a lot more to come.

I think about doing it all the time... then I remember how much it is to add a feature on a car I don't daily drive in.

Pointless addition. Takes about two weeks to forget it ever existed. I also rather like that the remote lights stuff up. Such lovely headlights on the F series. Pressing a button is not that hard.

Yeah, it would be nice to have, but only because I drive the X5 most days and I sometimes forget the CS doesn’t have it. I’ve pulled the handle while locked no less than a dozen times over 2+ years forgetting that it won’t unlock automatically.

It’s a very small inconvenience, and if I drove it everyday I wouldn’t even think twice about it. Still pretty cool that your CS was retrofitted at someone else’s expense.

I definitely miss it in the beginning as my f82 I daily drove for 4 years had it. But you're right, now I don't even think twice about it. Still, would be nice to have and can't imagine it saved that much weight did it?

No. It’s removed simply to give off the impression of weight savings and to pad BMWs margin on this already highly profitable model.

You think the CS is an especially profitable model? A ~2,000 unit special edition with specific CFRP hood, one of a kind carbon roof, carbon transmission tunnel, I think the seat backs are borrowed from the M4 as is the engine tuning.

I’d imagine there’s some R&D with the increased power over the F87C plus the tuning of the adaptive suspension. 763M wheels and Cup2s.

I’d bet that the F87C profit is higher simply due to volume.

I don’t recall anything marketing “comfort access delete” as a weight savings pitch.

Even though my LCI M2 has CA, I’ll sometimes fish around in my pocket for the fob and press the unlock button just to see the angel eyes glow to life. It’s lovely.

95% of the efficiencies in building the CS are still there because it’s the same basic car as the Competition. The increase in MSRP is far greater than any parts, labor, and R&D cost related to building the CS. So yes I think there’s far larger margin with the CS even at a smaller volume.

I'd wager it's to make them harder to do the repeater theft steal known to be easy on this gen BMW's with comfort access.

I wouldn't say far greater. If you add the price of the cf roof, hood, shift tunnel, alcantara trim/wheel, 763 with cup 2s and diffuser/lip then you're nearing 20k. And that's before you add labor for the install of everything. The remaining value from it's uniqueness and rareness and honestly the MSRP of 85 is not that unreasonable
