MP CF Spoiler install…Betalink K1 Adhesive kit?

So, I’m planning to install the M Performance CF Spoiler over the weekend.

I got a deal on the spoiler from a BMW Dealer in Germany over the internet. I paid for it and arranged to pick up from the sales department over a weekend as the parts department was closed. When I arrived to pick it up, one of the sales guys gave me the spoiler in a box and a box containing a Betalink K1 Adhesive kit.

I’ve seen a few videos of the spoiler being installed just using the double-sided tape which is already installed on the spoiler. I’m wondering if anyone has used the Betalink K1 adhesive kit as well? I’m thinking the dealer would use it if they were installing the spoiler…

Car sees a considerable amount of Autobahn time so I want ensure the spoiler says on at speed!

I would not use betalink if you ever want to remove the spoiler in the future.

3m tape is plenty strong enough for the spoiler in my opinion.

I had mine installed by My dealer and they used the 3M tape. One thing to note is many owners have had issues with the edges lifting up slightly as the included tapes not thick enough and recessed too far. Not a massive issue but worth noting.

The 3M tape will be enough.. would not recommend using betalink as well since that is more permanent and not necassary.

Got it, being able to remove it at some point might be handy. Thanks!

Okay, thanks for the tip, I'll look at adding a little extra maybe.

Looking further into this issue, looks like BMW has recently switched back to Betalink instead of 3M tape for spoilers... So if you purchase one from here on out, there's a good chance you might not get the one with the red 3M tape, but instead receive a spoiler with Betalink on the side. In that case, it would be recommended to attach your own 3M double sided automative tape. If you do decide to install with your spoiler with Betalink, just know that you will probably end up damaging your paint if you ever plan on removing or changing out your spoiler.

Just installed mine last week. I used 3M and added a bit in the corners. The spoiler is not coming off at any speed, even with just tape, unless you hit a tree. Be careful because the second the tape touches the paint it locks into place.

I went back and forth on 3M tape + Betalink several times and did a ton of research. Ultimately I decided to only use the 3M tape pre-installed on the M Performance spoiler.

One thing I will highly suggest that I have not seen many suggesting -
1. clean and prep the area where the 3M tape is applied (rubbing alcohol, etc.), then
2. Make sure to get some 3M adhesion promoter (like these: https://www.amazon.com/3M-Adhesion-P...8W4W344VRQES3K) and apply it to where the 3M tape will stick.

If you use the adhesion promoter, be ready to stick that spoiler down as soon as it touches, the promoter sucks that tape down.

maddoc , thanks for the tip and the link, I've never heard of 'adhesion promoter' but it's on it way! :-)

I did this when I installed CS spoilers on my friends M3 and M4, they are stuck on pretty good!

With regards to number 1, use mineral oil to remove the old glue, best to let it soak for a while. The remainder is best removed with clay

Also lightly polish the surface > quick detail > alcohol > promoter > stick

Use the clay to remove any adhesion promoter residue.

I treated the spoiler install like I was prepping for ceramic coating. Removed all the leftover adhesive from the factory spoilers, clayed, polished, removed any leftover waxes or films with carpro eraser, used 3M adhesive promoter, and my edges still lifted even after taping them down for a couple of days after install. It's not terrible but I notice. I wouldn't be surprised if BMW went back to Betalink due to getting tired of customers bringing their cars back in to get the spoilers refitted due to the edges lifting.

Put the install off waiting for the adhesion promoter and extra 3M to arrived from Amazon. It showed up today so I'll get to it this weekend. I'm going with just the 3M tape for now and if I'm not happy with it, I'll take if off again the following weekend and go with the Betalink

the spoiler should have his dual side tape already intalled. i wouldn't use the betalink. be sure to clear the trunk with alcool. When you remove the old spoiler, in case of leftover tape, the tar remover helps a lot in this cases.

Looks like you've already decided on the 3M tape, but I'll throw in a dissenting opinion. I used the Betalink. Simply put, it's just stronger. It's like the spoiler becomes part of the trunk lid. I removed the OEM spoiler, and the M-perf one I installed with the Betalink is on better than the OEM. I'm not planning to remove it, ever. I just wanted the extra peace of mind. Also, when you see how easy it is to remove a spoiler that uses tape, I wanted some theft deterrence (I know, I'm just being unrealistically paranoid). Just FYI, Betalink can get messy if you're not careful.

+1
3m vhb and let it cure for 72 hours for 100% adhesion strength. Just clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol before installing it.

Mine has been held on via 3m for 3+ years in all sorts of weather and cleaning, and it has yet to let go or be even remotely loose.

+1 on tar remover. It will basically melt the old tape. Just go slow and don't leave it on your paint for more than a minute or so.

To remove old adhesive

I bought this but have not tried it yet. I'm not sure if this is an aerosol version of the next item?
https://www.autogeek.net/3m-adhesive-cleaner.html

I have used this
https://www.hillas.com/Categories/3M...SABEgIvmfD_BwE

this is one of my favorites
https://www.titanlabs.net/oil-flo-sa...lvent-cleaner/

If you go the tape route

Use promoter
https://www.autogeek.net/adhesive-promotion.html

Tape comes in a couple of widths and roll lengths, these are two of them.

So, I installed the MP Rear Spoiler last Sunday.

To remove the OEM spoiler, I used dental floss wrapped around two small screwdrivers and sawed it back and forth under the spoiler. I used about a meter of floss doubled up twice and started on the right-hand side where the floss went under it by about 12 cm before it met any resistance!

The OEM spoiler was off in about two-minute leaving behind two lines of OEM double-sided tape. Removing the old tape took about 30 minutes with goo gone. I cut up some paper towel, placed it on top of the tape and then soaked the paper towel with goo gone. After about a minute, I used a plastic one-sided razor blade to scrape it off. Then I used an old microfiber towel and some goo gone to remove the remaining residue.

After I had all the old double-sided tape removed, I used the Paint & Plastic cleaner from the Betalink Adhesive kit to clean the surface.

Then I measured the spoiler and marked the center with blue painter tape so that I could use the Roundel on the trunk to center it. To measure it, I put the spoiler on a square bench and lined up the two ‘end points’ with the edge of the bench. That was when I noticed that the spoiler wasn’t quite flat, there was a slight twist to it. Discovering this allowed me to prep for an additional step I hadn’t planned which was to have some bar clamps ready.

I added two extra strips of 3M tape to both ends and to the center of the spoiler and stripped off some of the double-sided tape to leave about 6 cm of film folded at 45 degrees to ensure I could pull it just like the tape that came fitted to the spoiler.

I have the car ceramic coated and getting the blue painters’ tape to stick was just about impossible but the area where the spoiler would be located was ‘stripped’ by the goo gone and the paint and plastic cleaner

Once I was happy with the placement, I outlined the area with painters tape as best I could so I knew where to wipe the adhesion promoter. maddoc were you ever right, once the adhesion promoter was on, the 3M tape stuck to the trunk like white on rice!

I positioned it and pulled just a very small piece of the tape at the center back of the spoiler to hold it in place and then checked the ends to ensure they were in the correct place and pulled a small section of tape at each end. Once happy with the location, I pulled all the tape and pressed it down all around.

I used the painters’ tape to hold it down but it wasn’t sticking very well but I used the clamps at each end and in the center. I used a deep well socket wrapped in drawer liner for the center clamp. I propped the trunk open and left it like that for three days.

When I removed the clamps and the tape, I was very happy with the results.

Thanks to all for the tips and advice!
