Could be both, but the OPFs are pretty big. There are number of articles that point toward the real reason being the necessity to fit OPFs.
I did some more research and found this image. My assumption is that it's the same per this and should be fine with OPFs. I mean we're talking about the driveshaft that is tucked underneath the heat covers and the CF version won't be hanging any lower or going to be any different in physical size. If anything there will be less a center joint that holds the two piece oem DS.

BMW stopped fitting CF shafts on OPF cars. Why? Because the CF shaft is a larger diameter than the steel version (less air gap to shields). The OPF is also a larger diameter than the old 2ndary cats (less air gap to shield from heat source).....and the OPF gets hot, very hot, above 600 Celsius when regenerating. CF is a super strong material with one weakness, heat. Put the combo together and you have problem.

Thanks for this commentary. Since I'm in the US, it's not something I'm familiar with, the OPF fun.

I will say that since they haven't designed it yet, we can share these notes for them for their consideration. Perhaps the diameter can be kept the same and not large like the OEM one. Heat wrap around certain areas on the exhaust could also help cut down the on the heat.

I'm not sure there is much you can do there regarding diameter. CF shafts normally have to be a larger diameter to make better use of their properties. I have a BMW CF shaft here that I can measure for you.
Good idea about additional heat shielding, if it fits. The OPF is very tightly packaged. Maybe an aluminium sleeve on the CF shaft local to OPF will work.

Picture below shows the diameter of the steel shaft vs the BMW M CF shaft.

I appreciate you sharing your info and experience. I'm going to reiterate the fact that this is not a group buy for OEM style CF drive shaft. This is clearly an aftermarket option that will be a brand new design similar to what they have made for other platforms. I'm confident that when we have enough people to move forward with this, they will kindly take note of the folks that have OPF to ensure no issues with fitment, quality and overall a proper design.

I'm still interested in this. I'm considering my winter mods right now, so would love to get this on the list. Any idea when you plan to drop the order in?

Thanks for confirming that you're still interested, right now we have 10 people signed up and need 5 more commitments.

Once we have the full 15, I'll reach out via PM to each person to confirm their interest. From there we still need 1 volunteer to send their OEM Drive Shaft to them for the help with design/R&D as per my OP.

Then from there, we'll get the 50% payments sent to MFactory and they will take it from there.

The drive shaft is about USD$1200. Why not split the cost across the 15 buyers and then just sell the DS cheap at a later date? Worst case 80 and best case 50 bucks each. Means no down time for anyone

I actually thought of this, I even tried to find one on eBay from a parted M2. I agree that it would be the easiest and best route to take. I will definitely propose this as an option for everyone involved. Main issue right now is that we just need the 5 more people.

Add me to the list. I'm getting one for my E90 M3 as well.

Depending on the timing, I could volunteer to send my driveshaft in. The M2 isn't really driven much in Q1 of each year, so assuming this actually moves forward in the next month to 6 weeks, I'd definitely send mine in.

I'll write up more on this later, but to me there's a lot of difference over this vs. a carbon fiber roof or hood, or lighter wheels. I'm not sure if many people have driven the same car back to back with a 2 piece steel driveshaft and a 1 piece carbon fiber one, but the difference is pretty marked. It definitely isn't flashy though!

You've been added. We are now at 11, just 4 more spots to go!

For those on the list (on page one of this thread) and see this update, let us know if you're still interested if not, that's ok I just need to gauge interest. Spread the word if you want to get this done sooner than later.

I would be up for this.

Will this be a "plug & play"? ( I haven't read all the posts.

What is the weight difference? (If known yet)

It would be as simple as unbolt your OEM DS and bolt in the the CF DS. Weight difference is not known yet as this would be the first ever made for the F87, also the first post of this thread has all the details and why I'm doing this. Not too much to read/sift through.

I'll add your name to the list.

What...? This is about rotating mass, grab your mom's dough roller and spin it, now grab a paper towel roll and spin it. Do you notice anything? I really think you should probably stick with the aesthetics, and buy yourself one of those $40 BMW coffee mugs, to keep at your desk at work.

I think the thing that jumped out at me was "not that much more" in cost. I mean, sure, the CF roof is only $1500 to $2000, but getting it on the car is like another $3000-$4000, plus you run the risk of cracking the windows when removing, etc. Car isn't black? Get ready to paint the drip rails and antenna to match, etc. It really isn't close.

That said, I think a CF roof would look amazing, and people should do what makes them happy, but yeah, the performance and driving feel experience
difference between the CF driveshaft and CF roof is pretty massive.

ebisu8 is this cross posted in the N55 subsection? Since it works with the OGs and Comps should it be? Want me to put something in there linking back to this?
