M2 CS delivery - USA (MB - 6MT - 2NH - BLK 763M - PSS) - My 8th BMW and 5th M Car
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I was on the hunt for a weekend car - something fast, small/mid-sized, rear-wheel drive, two-door coupe, and it 100% without question needed to be in a MANUAL transmission. My budget was $85-95k USD. The car also had to be “special”, meaning worthy enough to want to keep for a few years and not get tired of. I get bored with cars easily and rarely keep them a full 3 years. At this price point, I’d be remiss if I didn’t take a peek at the new 718 or used 911 Porsche market but quickly realized even my $100k max budget came with its share of compromise. I decided that if I’m going Porsche, I’m doing a 911 in a manual and did not want to buy something more than 3 or 4 years oId. I found a nice subject at $98k: a 2017 Miami Blue 991.2 911 Carrera S in a 7-speed manual, generously optioned though curiously without any upgrades to the seats or interior. It was a really nice car and hard to pass up but I acknowledge, for what I was looking for, I should really have double the budget if I was genuinely interested in jumping into a 911. At the time, the leading horse in the race was the upcoming new M4, but it hadn’t yet been announced and was holding out hope for its new nose. Waiting for the official G80/G82 announcement, I passed on my local dealer’s first M2 CS allocation in September 2020. Then it happened: the new M3/M4 was officially announced by BMW. The rumors were true. Oh no, no, no, I am not sure I can get on board. I get what BMW is trying to do, I get it. It’s an evolution yada yada. I am not sure I can be on board for this party. I am sure it’s an absolute riot to drive, but will the design ever grow on me? I couldn’t believe I had just missed out on my local dealers’ single M2 CS allocation and now I have to go hunt for one. I guess I really didn’t need a weekend car after all. Despite its looks, I begrudgingly turned back to spec’ing a 2021 M4 base manual which came in at a whopping $93k, naturally with carbon seats and exterior bits. Despite the excitement of being a potential early adopter, I never felt like “I had to have it”, largely due to its radical new front-end design. It was a bit much, even for me - a huge M3 fanboy. When I realized how heavy and large the 2021 M4 6MT was growing to be, or how the digital RPM tachometer was all weird and inverse like on my wife’s X7, I started becoming less and less interested in wanting one. Besides, the only color combo that looked impressionable to me was Sao Paulo Yellow on Yas Marina Blue carbon and that was quite daring even for me. About 2 months later, November 2021, I was visiting my local dealership servicing the wife’s X7. I popped in on my CA to cry about missing out on their single M2 CS allocation and he casually mentioned he had another incoming allocation which was still configurable. Without pause (except to ask my wife), I immediately jumped on it. It felt right. That was my car. So there I was. Buying the best of BMW of the past 16 years of being an owner and brand loyalist. Peak M. What sums the M2 CS up best for me is that it’s the ultimate expression of what loyal BMW M owners of the prior few generations, such as myself, have been chasing after for years. A car that encapsulates what the Ultimate BMW Driver’s Car of the past 20 years might very well be - before the very deliberate transition to a very different BMW. Here are the past BMW which brought me here... "Saving the Manuals" Since 2005 — 2005 BMW E46 M3. Steel Grey on Imola Red. 6MT. 2008 BMW E92 M3. Alpine White on Black. 6MT. 2008 BMW E92 M3. Now on my 3rd PPF’d car, this team has done nothing but the best work out there and highly recommend both their services and products. I believe he did 5 or 6 M2 CS so far and Phil is getting one himself. It’s no wonder why I shipped my car 110 miles there and back for them to work on. I doubt I’d let anyone else touch my cars. I would bother Phil almost daily (chrome or black, 30% or 35%, shipping you more carbon) and he’s always quick to reply and manage my mania. Due to C-19, this ended up being a 100% touchless transaction from the comfort of my home. I had my car shipped from dealer to detailer and Phil arranged my covered transport back home - nothing but trust and it came out perfect to match. As for actually driving the car? Well, the snow finally started to melt and at 61 degrees today it was the warmest its been all year. I only got its first 50 miles in today and was able to zip through backroads and the woods for a bit then on the highway for a few miles to wrap the ride. The car feels great, very analog. Interior feels the same as my F80 M3 but I do miss the Comfort Access, HUD, and Leather Dash the most. I DO NOT miss the armrest and don’t even notice it’s gone! Exhaust sounds ok. I think volume needs to be kicked up a notch but yes I will wait till it breaks in more. I also noticed the exhaust flaps don’t open on the fly in Sport or Sport Plus - it takes a good 2 mins to open when car warms up and even so you can’t tell. Also agreed that Sport Plus sounds the best and isn’t as snappy as it was on the M3. The stick feels familiar but more fluid. Clutch travel does not bother me at all, never had CDV so will leave it off. Steering wheel is great, it’s the perfect thickness. Wish I didn’t have to slam the doors - they do remind me of the E46 doors though. Overall, I’m super happy I finally have it. Took 112 days from deposit to final delivery but she’s home! Ah thanks everyone! Waiting for this car was the ultimate test of patience. The wait made me obsess even more about tint, M Performance parts, exhaust, CCBs, accessories, etc. than
usual. So happy the weather is getting nicer in the Northeast for a few days at least. |

I love your car because it the best colour spec. Blue black and red is the manly man's choice.
How did you like the mini? Was it reliable? Do you still have it? |

First and foremost, congratulations on an excellent choice.
Keenly as I read, your story has something in common with many other M2 CS owners' stories. They would have originally been looking at G80/82 at some point only to realise they couldn't see themselves in one once they saw it on display. Further bolstered by being a limited production, top of its range, and everything that's good about the Drift Machine, you all chose to buy the M2 CS instead. What's more, you all attest to the desire to keep it for several years which would make the cars even harder to get, down the track, in the second-hand market. I'm glad you got what you wished for and commend you on your exquisite taste. May you be rewarded with hundreds of happy memories and years of enjoyment from your beloved.

Phil is the best.
I agree the exhaust is too low. I dig the doors need slamming like the e46. I could not care any less about the lack of arm rest too. She is a fun car!

Beautiful! Where is Lehigh Valley? You probably have some really good roads there. I drive up to Lancaster PA and rip around the farm roads from time to time.

This might be the final nail in the coffin before I jump to Porsche in a few years. My thought was to get the best of the last generation before I throw in the towel. We'll see if I eat my words in a few years. Thanks! I'm about 90 mins northeast of Lancaster. Lehigh Valley is a small region nobody's ever heard of in Northeastern Pennsylvania bordering New Jersey. 95 mins west of NYC and 75 mins north of Philly. Kinda nowhere lol. Once I pull out of my development I'm in the middle of farmland and backwoods - just windy backroads and rural routes. Bad thing is we spray gravel and brine instead of salt which can really mess up your car over the winter. Our street sweeper cleans it all up only once per year early Spring. |
