From that video I’m leaning no or it’s very mild. Compare to my video: https://youtube.com/shorts/FPtrpdNiGJk?si=34B6uL0t-IJxcWxM It’s the clear knocking. Injector noise is the majority of yours. |

How many miles did you drive with this issue?
Hello,
I am currently having the same issue. I am in the process of finding a shop to resolve this. I am wondering if I continue to drive it or I should stop and get it fixed asap. |

I'd drive with it probably given that the noise seems to affect nearly every S55 and there's very little evidence of damage from it at lower mileage.

That’s what I figured. Seeing that some people had the unusual wear on their motor scared me a little but good to know it’s not that serious.

I think I have the same issue.
Bought the car 1 month ago.. Build is May 2019, so its just out of warranty. 25k miles on the clock. I shot this video about 60sec after a cold start. At the end of the video you can hear the RPM fall and the frequency of the *clunk* noise is reduced. Now I'm worried if the noise is still there after the engine is warm. I think it is. I'll go for a little ride tomorrow and check it out. F*ck me... Last edited by Toad; 11-18-2024 at 02:51 PM.. |

Just had mine diagnosed & fixed, they replaced and properly torqued the cam ledge bolts. Noise is gone, car feels and sounds great. Roughly 2k~ job.
My M2c has been modified since new, and i plan to keep it a long time, so I take extra care of any irregularities. Noise started around 32k miles, I stopped driving it and had it fixed. I had 2 n55 cars before my m2c- both under warranty and they both made the noise, dealer said it was normal, and, since warranty, i trusted it. Spun the hub in one of them, dealer covered. I dont think they are related issues, just wanted to share that i spun the hub in an n55 at oem power- happened while using the kickdown. To anyone having this problem- just make sure you go to a shop that knows about it and knows their bmw's. I went to 2 shops- first shop said it was a piston slapping then asked if they could buy it 😂 |

If I was you, and you have the ability to remove the valve cover DIY I’d do what others have and replace the bolts one by one and then no retiming needed. FWIW I did send in a Blackstone labs oil analysis and they found nothing out of the norm but only did about 40 miles on the car after it started as I wasn’t going to risk the engine over it. |

I’ve had the engine tick for about 15,000 miles. Recently decided to get it sorted at an independent specialist here in the UK. No damage when opened up and didn’t seem to be misaligned new gasket and bolts fit. Smooth as a sewing machine now. £600 all in.

My '19 M2C had this tick when I bought it 31k miles and initially did not recognize it as an issue. This month at 35k I performed my annual oil change and noticed a singular tiny flake/piece of debris in the old filter. Decided I should bite the bullet and perform the fix.
Followed this guide and replaced the cam ledge bolts 1x1 except for one which I stripped (did not want to risk using using a bolt extractor). They were absolutely over-torqued. It was a good opportunity to clean the injectors and replace the seals, valve cover gasket, etc. Hopefully not replacing the entire VC doesn't come back to bite me in another year as this was not a "fun" activity. I also replaced the valvetronic actuator and regreased everything, as it was doing the 2 second "brrr" sound on unlock that folks say is indicative of the motor skipping/binding. The car never had any drivability issues or threw any codes or DTCs. Upon pulling the valve cover, the eccentric shaft was on max lift. Not sure if this is normal. My eccentric shaft had visible wear marks but I couldn't feel anything with a pick, so again, hopefully skipping the $1k shaft replacement doesn't come back to bite me. Performed the relearn in ISTA and test drove, everything seems well so far, no tick and but "burr" sound on unlock remains. ![]() Could my cam/bearings be scored? Will I end up having to redo all of this again? Maybe. I will change my oil again in 500 miles and see how it looks. Feel free to roast me. ![]() This was my first time performing any "serious" engine work or using ISTA, if you are mechanically inclined and take your time, you too should have the confidence to perform this fix. Wow. That’s legit. Even if you made a mistake or should have replaced that shaft, oh well. You took the biggest variable out of engine work: ‘other people’.

Anyone notice the sound after warmup is complete? Mine seems to be more noticeable after warmup. Sounds like the same ticking as everyone else is seeing. Taking it to a shop after the holiday but want to make sure it’s not something else

No problem, no damage found, mine was fairly bad ticking when cold for a while but never when warm. Cost was mostly labour, about 5-6 hours if I remember right. They now have the alignment tooling on site so don’t have to wait for that but one of the gaskets was a bit of an issue to get hold of.

Politely asking if guys with this issue can post the year of their M2C and maybe even the month of build to see if there’s a pattern. Or maybe it’s just assumed it can/will happen to all S55 engines?
I have a late June 2021 build on my ‘21 M2C and do not (yet?) have this problem. Clock is ticking (no pun intended) on my factory warranty, which ends in July of ‘25. |
