What will be the upgraded N55B30T0 M2 engine?

The rumors are out there and the criticisms are flying but what will be different about the N55B30T0? Possibly more like the N54 in the 1M? Pull in technology from the S55? Is there any thing more than rumor at this point? I am as curious as anyone and wonder what you may know or be thinking. Thanks.

My guess...stronger internals, bigger turbo, better cooling

Given the rumor of 50-60 more HP I would suspect more in the way of head work to give the 15-20 percent increase in power. Valves and ports tuning will give these types of increases alone. The bottom end seems to be already steel crank so I suspect that will not be touched. Don't think the turbo will be changed with the exception of more boost at peak range.

Different internal engine parts(pistons) among them.

Different internals, head work, maybe a different turbo. I expect this motor to have a high-rpm bias that the N55 does not currently have. Can't expect that with the small frame turbo the N55 has.

Am I the only person that thinks they're not going to change a thing except for better cooling with a remap and more boost?

Except for some stronger internals, NO you are not the only person that thinks that.

I doubt bigger turbos. The S55 has small turbos.

I echo most of the responses.
Stronger internals, up the psi, improve the cooling.

I would guess that they have a reliability safety factor on their engines for certain load testing. Maybe the M branded cars have a lower factor vs the series cars but I doubt it. That said, if they increase the output of the series engine significantly like in this case, they must provide countermeasures to ensure the reliability safety factor remains constant.

That's my take anyways.

M-Division will distress the engine more, offer better breathing and upgrade the internals.

The M2 engine won't be about power, it will be about engine response. Plus, a 3,300lbs car doesn't need 450+ ft-lbs of torque just off idle. The M2 will be about banging gears.

3300lbs... I wish. Not likely, though.

I'm hoping for forged internals, bigger turbo, larger oil coolers

If they can swing the boost-pretensioner (should be able to as it's just software) and the air-to-water intercooler (unlikely) I'd be a happy camper.

You contradict yourself, response in a turbo engine absolutely requires a broad torque curve, with full torque available from idle to peak revs.

This engine will be about nothing but power, it may only have circa 380 HP, but will most likely have circa 500 NM of torque available almost everywhere in the rev range.

The engine code has already been leaked. A B-series engine is out of the question at this point.

You misinterpreted what I was saying... lol

I meant that, ..the over-all power & torque figures are not going to matter. And that evein if.. 450ft-lbs @ 1,300rpms... TRACTION would be more of a problem, than the M2 only coming in @ 380ft-lbs..?

That, the actual "loss" of final HP/TQ claims, to the M4, are/will be superficial. Because the final HP & TQ numbers are not going to hinder the M2's performance. The M2 without question will be a much more focused car than the M4. It will also be much more capable than the M4, just look at the M235i R.

So, knowing the n55.. knowing that power & torque are bountiful, I'd rather have BMW focus on the engine's response, tranny, chassis & seating..

...than worry about someone who going to buy one and drag race it and needs to claim "480tqz.."

BTW.. I am not a HP junkie & DINAN has a 409ft-lbs unlock for my car... I just can't fit enough rubber behind it, for it to even matter..

Yeah I get your point now, and I hope you are right, a responsive engine to match the chassis. if they get this right it will be an absolute keeper. Not to mention that I'll buy one regardless of how much power it has, simply because of the perfect proportions of this car.

It matters when you are in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, or 6th gear and are still accelerating down the front or back straight when your wheel spin stopped after the chirp of a hard shift, trying to keep up with the other cars who are now passing you because you can't match their power.

Traction & grip is one thing, power to keep moving in higher gears at the pace of higher powered cars is another issue.

So what about the driving technique known as throttle modulation? I find that feel very lacking in the drive by wire systems, and can only hope it's better in the M2, but still usable to keep wheel spin at bay.

i can't wait for this car....i love my e90m3 on track. i also love driving my wife's 135i. now if its a step up from the 1m coupe, i can't imagine how awesome this thing would be. basically better chassis than the e90m3, and more power than the 1m coupe. holy moly.
