The M2 would be much more special with an S55 engine!
No the s54 wasn't detuned.

My understanding was that the S55 was beefed up in many ways...there's a list on the M3/4 forum somewhere...

Tuned M235 =/= M2. In the same way a tuned 335i =/= M3.

Any further questions?

Wish they just put the s55 motor and detuned it a bit.

Or make it an updated n54 twin turbo over the single 55.

Granted from a suspension handling point it should be superior but if they are just beefing up the suspension steering brakes and chassis and popping a OEM JB tune on the n55 that's a bit disappointing

How in the hell are they going to get to 380 BHP without doing a whole lot more than that???
Exactly. As a 1M owner I hope for more than just a drop in N55, the N54T was designed for the 1M

You're correct... but the N55 is basically (in simple terms, I know there are specific differences) a single turbo version of the N54, making the M3/4 motors like the N54. I personally love the N54 motor and am confident that the M3/4 motor is going to be amazing.

My problem is the M car (I know they used the N54 in the 1M, but I'm sure that was due to the low volume build) should have a bespoke engine. That's what I'm looking for when paying this kind of money. Make sense?

I for one, am absolutely THRILLED they're using the N55. It's solid. All the kinks have been worked out. There is a lot of power left on the table. It sounds fantastic! It remains to be seen if it will be single or twin turbo.

And the obvious question, why not a de-tuned S55?

Next steps are:

1) Greenlight the 2-series Gran Coupe (but for the love of god, DON'T make it a hatch!)
2) Greenlight the M2 Gran Coupe

Basically the same recipe as the 1M. Honestly think the N55 in stock form has better response than the N54. So a tuned N55 should be perfect, combined with some weight loss.

If gets a widebody, carbon roof, carbon driveshaft, DCT option, and the typical M mechanical bits. This thing will be and instant classic.

S55 in this car would of killed the M3/M4 sales. The N55 is a good platform especially with the drivetrain this car will have.

This is correct.

S54 in Z4M and Z4M Roadster and even the later 2001 Z3 M Coupe/Roadster had subtle exhaust differences that limited the power to 315 hp in some cases.

Agreed. The N54 doesn't have stupid valvetronic which complicates tuning and the N54 has proven a superior powerhouse for tuning.

Many comments about forged this and that and yet to see it all besides talk. Have you pulled a part the n55 to go over its internals. Have you seen anyone use a bigger turbo to see what the motors can really handle? Stop this hear say, obviously Bmw knows what they're doing!

Actually having been intimately involved in BMW products for 2 years I can shed light on it. The pistons and rods are different as well as the part numbers. N55s have cast rods.
