Another Reason to HATE The F'ing ASD!!

Just yesterday the car started to continuously play out all sort of popcorn-popping and fabric-tearing sounds through the speakers, except it sounded much worse. This is happening independent of throttle and car movement. This is happening even when the ignition is off and the car is locked from outside. There's also a very loud white noise. I had the ASD coded off since I got the car 4 months ago. I recoded to its org backup to turn it back on to no avail. Took it to the dealer today and they said the ASD amp appears to be oxidized from winter salt bc there is a small opening to outside element. F'ing ASD POS that has no place in the car to begin with and it's now another thing to go gremlin. OMG, I want to find the asshat responsible for the ASD decision and lock him in the same room with the Dr. Pepper mini-me until his ears bleed. /end rant

I agree with you. Wish the ASD would just disappear.

Even without the ASD wouldn't your amp be fucked and need replacing anyway?

OP: Sorry this happened to you. Where is the hole the dealer said caused the water entry and corrosion? A battery vent? An uncapped water drain? A defect in the trunk weather-strip? Missing body sealer? For sure, it’s odd and not normal - but I’m suspicious of the dealer’s diagnosis.

My concern too (as someone who would like to code it off). If you coded it off, why would this happen at all?

I coded mine off 10 days ago with Carly for BMW, and it's been gone ever since. I have no intention of coding it back on.

And you base this on what?

I'm not a believer in doing a lot of coding; I'll code off 2 or 3 things on a car and let it be, such things (in this case) as the ASD and Seat Belt Chime.

I can see where someone would try to get each and every choice on each and every module exactly the way that they think they want it; I think that is a mistake.

But a few codings are unlikely to screw anything up.

What is the basis for your comment, if there is one, that is?

I don't have the full detail yet. I was actually at the dealer to have them break loose a stripped OEM (McGardbage) wheel bolt that a tire shop had over-torqued (they replaced a tire for me). I scope-creeped this ASD amp issue in there so they were only able to do a quick diagnosis for today. Sounded like they have dealt with this before. I have to schedule another service appointment or two to get this addressed. I will ask them for full detail on the opening and post that info as soon as I find out. Gonna get that sealed. I haven't read any similar issue on here so it may only affect very few.

He clearly said the amp got physically damaged from salt and moisture.

Thing is, with ASD 'off' the car goes from a fake lion roar to a quiet tame house cat

I turn it on/off every two weeks or so

Yes, the amp is f'ed and needs replacing. The service guy said "ASD amp" but now that I think about it, that amp likely powers all audios. If that is the case, this could've happened even without ASD unless the opening that he mentioned is ASD related. Still many unknowns but I will post concrete findings as I learn about them

Sounds like you need a better exhaust.

ASD sounds more like a hyena's roar. For a genuine lion's roar, sport cat is the answer imo

Have the M-Performance one

Burbles are nice but rest of exhaust is not very audible unless with windows or moon roof open. Drone also gets annoying on long trips

I'd go catted downpipe but mpe with open valves already is pissing off my entire neighbourhood

I believe this is a fairly well-known issue. There have been a couple of threads on here regarding the amp getting water damage due to an opening/vent in the rear driver's side wheel well I believe.

The ASD is auto-amputating itself, which is fitting, don't you think?

The last time someone thought that the ASD module got wet from the outside and destroyed itself found out that it was not the case. He thought that by power washing inside the fender wells that water somehow got onto the ASD through the vent.

It was later determined that when his windows were tinted, the tint shop used and I know they do, copious amounts of water that subsequently traveled down the electrical cabling and entered the ASD slowly killing it. I’ll bet your car is tinted.

Btw, the best way to get rid of the ASD is the bypass harness.

Are your windows tinted? Specifically your rear windshield?

If so, the installer probably used too much applicator fluid and it funneled from the inside of the rear deck down into the trunk and onto the amp components. It's happened to a bunch of people and it caused their amps to fry.

Another possibility would be water entering the amp area through an air vent above the drivers side rear wheel well. Don't ever stick a power washer up there when cleaning the car.
Found the above post from a related thread. Gonna ask the dealer whether the vent can be sealed after amp replacement
